REFLECTION

Upon working on with this week’s module, we gained a perception that, in all academic
writing, originality and honesty of the authors are counted as must-have qualities. Both must be embodied
to prevent what we call plagiarism which is a crime that one must be ashamed of because it reflects their
credibility and moral not just as a researcher but also as a human being. It is unethical because it is a way
of owning something that you do not own, with or without the permission of the brains behind it. It is
stealing of intellectual property, which is against the laws, that we must never carry out or tolerate. Aside
from it, we also realized how paraphrasing can save us from committing plagiarism. It is a way of
giving someone else’s idea a new substance with proper citation.
If there is one remarkable sentence in this lesson it would be the reminder that “you ought to be
responsible for the things that you write in your research.” Those words may be simple, but it made us
think deeply and assess how we performed during the making of our study. We tried to remember details
about our work if we acted according to our responsibilities or we crossed the line and pushed through the
limits. As we analyze the types of plagiarism that we have read from the module, there is a worry that we
might have committed one of those types so we browse and recheck our paper if something can be
indicated as plagiarism. Knowing that plagiarism can be direct, self, mosaic and accidental, we had the
chance to improve our output and secure our credibility as student researchers. We did not have any
trouble answering the activities in the module because we made sure that we fully understood the prior
concepts as well as the key learnings before we gave our final answers.
Since the next lesson is about paraphrasing, it trained us how to turn ideas into our own words
without removing its core and recognizing the original brains behind those concepts. It is a way of
creating something out of what is already existing. We genuinely appreciate the five steps mentioned in
this module because it is a huge help not just today but also to the near future as we work on more
academic writings. Similar to the first lesson, we did not face any difficulty answering the activities
because we really pondered on the topic and applied it properly.
In a nutshell, being able to understand this module, which tackles plagiarism and paraphrasing, is
indeed a life changing experience for all of us because it changed and helped us correct our mistakes.
Without this learning material, we would not be able to know our shortcomings, mistakes and different
acts that shows how irresponsible we are. We are beyond thankful that we had the opportunity to study
modules like this that aims to lead us into a honest path of writing, far from plagiarizing.
