Comments
Durable cases are advantageous to avoid accident drop damage. Ergonomics
of the unit also matter as this reduces fatigue for the user and reduces risk of
accidentally damaging the unit.

A display is crucial to provide visual feedback in concert with the audible

feedback. Backlit / illuminated displays are desirable as are contrast
adjustment capability for variable light conditions. Note, no UE units have
contrast adjustment.

40kHz is fine for basic measurements but frequency adjustment is desirable

for more advanced readings.

dB values from Sonus / Sonophone units may seem "different" than what
users are used to seeing if they have experience with UE units (micro dB
versus dB).

Better resolutons yields better trend analysis.

Better accuracy of sensors yields better trend analysis.

Sonus PD Noise rejection algorithm ensure that background TEV is separated

out for actual PD activity.

Size matters…

Short charging times (or replaceable standard batteries) are definitely

advantageous.

Nice to have a temperature probe when testing Steam Traps…

Sonus PD is geared towards Utility and MV/HV substation work; Sonus XT is an
entry level unit for industrial customers; Sonophone III is a more advanced
unit for L2/L3 Ultrasound personnel; Sonophone E is for ATEX environments.

TEV is detected using a capacitive coupled sensor and is indicitive of Partial

Discharge inside of insulating components (stand-offs, cable insulation, etc.)
at 4.16kV and above. Up to 80% of MV equipment failure is related to this
type of PD.

Camera nice to take photos of leaks, asset tags, electrical problems, etc.

Audio notes can be used to document problems found during inspection or to

record an audible condition.
