ABSTRACT : The durability study and the alkaline degradation process of the cementitious medium
were undertaken in this work to evaluate the effect of granite and marble coating on the substrate. For
this purpose, the bilayer materials were subjected to different chemical attacks such as concentrated
solutions of strong, weak and strong base acids.
The results obtained show that before 7 days of immersion, the bilayer materials and the mortar
increase their ability to resist the attack solutions.
At 35 days of immersion, the mass losses are for: Mortar (9.49%, 40.63% and 3.48%); Granite bilayer
materials (3.81%; 18.51% and 1.07%) and Marble bilayer materials (10.44%, 22.62% and 2.94%) in
HCl solutions respectively; and. In the solution of, the recorded mass losses are very negligible over
the entire study period.
This study also emphasized the alkaline degradation affecting the interface of bilayer materials. It is
found that hydrated cement releases basic substances, which react with acidic solutions to give readily
water-soluble salts.
Key words : Granite coated tiles, durability, attack solutions and alkaline degradation.

Several issues impact the durability of granite
Granite coated tiles offer very interesting and marble bilayer materials. These include:
