There comes a time in everyone’s life when they have to make an important decision.
For me, that time came when I was just 10 years old. I’m talking about choosing my
first Pokémon. Everybody has the choice between these starters: Bulbasaur (no one
ever chooses Bulbasaur, but he holds a special place in my heart), Charmander, and
Squirtle.
The professor gave me and two other trainers a chance to choose one elemental type
that corresponds to our favorite Pokémon: Grass, Water, and Fire. Which one would
you choose? Don’t tell me now, just think about it. We’ll come back to this.
I love Charmander, so of course I chose Fire. The professor showed me the bottom
card which was Bulbasaur. No thank you, I prefer Charmander. The professor showed
the top card which is also Bulbasaur. Wait, you have two Bulbasaurs? He showed a
Bulbasaur in the middle as well, making that a total of three.
Oh, so you only have Bulbasaur? “No, because there is a Squirtle on the bottom,” he
said. Wait, I thought you had three Bulbasaur? “No, because there is a Squirtle on the
top and a Squirtle in the middle,” making that a total of three.
So no Charmanders? Only Bulbasaurs and Squirtles? “No, because there is a
Charmander on the bottom, one on the top, and one in the middle,” making that a total
of three Charmanders.
Wait, how can you have three Bulbasaurs, three Charmanders, and three Squirtles?
You must have 9 cards! “Nope,” said the professor, as he showed me a total of three
cards. 1, 2, 3.
At this point I didn’t know what to think. Pokémon trainer red ended up with
Charmander. Trainer blue ended up with Squirtle. Can you guess which one I ended
up with? NOPE! I chose Pikachu! Like I said, no one chooses Bulbasaur. But he does
hold a special place in my heart.
At the beginning of this story, I asked which element you would choose: Grass for
Bulbasaur, Water for Squirtle, or Fire for Charmander. Which one did you choose?

Coming to Grips
Pokémon Cards do not handle the same as standard bicycle playing
cards. It’s important to practice each move with the Pokémon Cards to get
accustomed with how they feel in your hands.
The routine hinges on the audience believing there are only 3 cards. When
dropping cards on the table or dealing them into a spectator’s hand, be
careful they do not separate. When presenting 2 or 3 cards as one, ensure
they stay tightly together.
To prepare a break under the cards when performing a triple lift, buckle
the bottom card. Use the left pointer finger to drag the top right corner of
the bottom card slightly to the left. This causes the bottom card to buckle,
separating at the lower base from the other 3 cards, allowing enough room for
you to grab the top 3 cards with the right hand and turn them over as one.

Presentational Touches for Energy Cards
Grass
Keep the Grass Energy Card in your top coat/shirt pocket. Anytime you say,
“No one chooses Bulbasaur,” follow with, “But he does hold a special place
in my heart.” This becomes a call back to your line, “But remember how I said
that he holds a special place in my heart? That’s why I keep this Energy Card
in my top pocket.”
Water
Keep the Water Energy Card in the booster back sleeve (not included). You
can find them in Walmart, Target, Tesco, or Amazon. See an alternate solution
below.

Fire
Keep the Fire Energy Card inside a fire wallet.* When they say “Fire” you’ll
have a startling production! Alternatively, you can use a card palm and flash
paper:
Place the Fire Energy Card along with flash paper in the side pocket of your
jacket and a lighter in the other. When they say “Fire”, one of your hands
goes into your pocket to grab a lighter while the other reaches into your other
to pull out a “napkin.” You are actually palming the Fire card while gripping
the flash paper in your fingertips.
While this is happening you say, “Before the show I wrote down a prediction
on a napkin…” then display the “napkin” for them to read, but there’s nothing
written. “Oh, did I write too small? Here, let me help,” you say as you light the
flash paper, then produce the card. “I hope that’s easier to read!”
*Use fire wallet & flash paper responsibly. You assume all risks in using them.
Alternate 4-Way Production
Use a 4-way multiple-outs envelope. It’s a special envelope with 4 hidden
compartments. Depending on how it’s opened, you can reveal a card then
show the envelope is empty.
Place the PokéMonte cards together in one compartment and each of the
energy cards individually in the other three. No matter what they chose you
can cleanly open the envelope and pull out the chosen card.
Buck’s Absurd Offerings
For the Grass Energy Card, put grass in your pocket. When they choose the
Grass element, slowly pull blades of grass from your pocket before revealing
the Grass Energy Card.

For the Water Energy Card, fill a squeaker or small container full of water. As
you ask them to open the booster pack, reach into your pocket and palm the
water filled object. After they remove the card, take the booster pack back
with the empty hand and bring it over to meet the loaded hand. As the hands
meet, you place the booster pack on top of the loaded object, pressing on
it with the thumb of the empty hand in a wringing like motion (it’s as if your
loaded hand is squeezing the empty hand’s thumb).
As water “drips” from the booster pack say, “Oh, it appears you forgot
something.” Ditch the loaded object by reaching into your pocket for a napkin
saying, “H2OMG, let me clean this up.”
TROUBLESHOOTING
They don’t know what Pokémon is: they don’t need to know. They only need
to know that YOU are excited about it. Tell them that ​​Pokémon is a fantasy
based, role-playing game that’s like rock-paper-scissors on steroids, but far
more fulfilling and addictive.
