SECTION 2: LOCALISER
LOCALISER
Although the information up to now has been considered as being applicable to both
VOR and localiser, the more important element on approach should be considered.
Figure 1 is a graphic of three different types of localiser capture, typically used in a
B757 type.

NORMAL 1 TURN
‘A bank angle is calculated that will bring the A/C onto the centre line in one turn. If it
is less.than the maximum 25° limit the A/C flies that bank angle. Example-intercept
angle is 45° bank angle 25°. If the calculated bank angle exceeds the 25° limit the
AIC will overshoot the beam.
DELAYED 1 TURN
If the estimated bank angle is less than 10° the capture is delayed until the estimated
bank angle exceeds 10°, thereby reducing the distance to complete capture.
2TURN
Ifthe intercept angle is so small that the capture cannot be completed sufficiently far
away from the runway threshold, a roll command is introduced to tum the A/C initially
towards the beam, and then followed by a normal capture.
Issued April 2008 Chapter 7: Section 2 a3Capture is enabled up to 120° intercept angles and maximum localiser deviation of
2”.
LOCALISER DISTANCE
The distance is calculated in feet in a similar way to glideslope using GEAR
ALTITUDE to determine distance from transmitter.
ROLL ANGLE
Used to determine 1 turn capture limits.
