Our Clean Energy Future

I would like to introduce myself as your new Labor Senator for Tasmania. It is humbling to have been entrusted with the responsibility to represent Tasmania. I believe that my role, as your representative, is to make sure I understand the problems you are facing and the matters which are important to you, and to take these views to Federal Parliament. There are challenges facing Australia right now and there will be more ahead. Climate change is one of those challenges, and I am proud the Gillard Labor Government has responded with a pollution policy that will keep Australians working and protect our environment. Our plan for a Clean Energy Future, the National Broadband Network and Paid Parental Leave are all examples of serious reform that Australia needs if we are to keep our economy and community strong and these are all reforms led by the Gillard Labor Government. The science on climate change is clear it is time to join the rest of the world in action
We have to plan to act on climate change because it is the right thing to do for australia and the environment. We will reduce pollution by taking the equivalent of 45 million cars off the road in 2020.

A price on pollution that forces polluters to pay

Because around 500 big polluters will have to pay for every tonne of pollution they make, they will have an incentive to reduce emissions. this will drive investment in new industries and create jobs that will be around for the long-term.

9 out of 10 households will receive assistance or tax cuts

the tax-free threshold will triple increasing from $6,000 to $18,200. anyone earning less than the tax-free threshold will no longer be required to lodge a tax return, benefitting low-income and part time workers and students in particular. Pensioners will also receive assistance equivalent to a 1.7 percent increase in the maximum rate of the pension.
