For Tring Purposes Only TAIL ROTOR DRIVE Tail Rotor Drive System Power to operate the tail rotor comes through the tail rotor drive system from the engine freewheel unit. The engine freewheel unit turns the forward short shaft and supplies power to the oil cooler blower assembly. The power then goes through the aft short shaft and the four tail rotor driveshaft segment assemblies to the tail rotor gearbo tail rotor gearbox chan, direction of the power 90 degrees and reduces Toi by a ratio of 2.53 to 1 a tums at 6317 rpm and the tail rotor gearbox output shaft turns at 2500 rpm. The forward end is fixed. It is connected to a coupling disc pack on the freewheeling output adapter. The aft end is connected to the oil cooler blower assembly by a coupling disc pack and a sliding splined adapter, (S/N 53443 and subsequent or S/N 53000 through 53442 post BHT- 407-II-30). The coupling disc packs are made of 9 to 12 separate steel discs. The disc circumference is cut in two places, parallel to grain of the steel. This index is an aid to make sure the grain of the steel is alternated with each disc (each disc is rotated 90 degrees from the previous disc). Do not change individual discs from one disc pack to another, once the disc pack has been run on the helicopter. Only new discs can be installed to replace unserviceable discs. Make sure only the grip portion (non-threaded section or shoulder) of the bolts are permitted to contact the discs. The impeller is attached to the shaft. For S/N 53443 and subsequent or S/N 53000 through 53442 post BHT-407-II-30 two weights are attached, along with the impeller, to the shaft. The weights are positioned aft of the impeller. The shaft is steel and drives the aft short shaft. The oil cooler blower shaft is splined at both ends. The oil cooler blower assembly is installed aft of the aff firewall. It holds the engine and transmission oil coolers. The oil cooler blower shaft is held by two bearing hangers, one on the forward end and one on the aft end. These are bolted to the helicopter structure. The oil cooler blower shaft is connected to the forward short shaft with a splined adapter (S/N 53443 and subsequent or S/N 53000 through 53442 post BHT-407-II-30) or a splined flywheel adapter (S/N 53000 through 53442 pre BHT-407-II-30) to the aft short shaft with a splined adapter, The splined adapters or the splined flywheel adapter can slide fore and aft on the oil cooler blower shaft splines. Balance plates may also be installed on each end of the oil cooler blower shaft to allow for dynamic balancing. The balance plates are only used with the splined adapter configuration. The impeller is covered by a housing that is attached to the helicopter structure. Helicopters that have an environmental control system use the oil cooler blower shaft to operate the air conditioner compressor. One of the weights is removed when the tail rotor drive is equipped with a compressor. Foe Training Puposes Only TAIL ROTOR DRIVE Oil Cooler Impeller Balancing With the impeller installed on the blower shaft assembly, place the blower assembly on a knife edge type balancer with the balancer blades positioned inboard of the keyway slots and the bearing journal surfaces. NOTE A maximum of seven NAS1149F0432P washers (or equivalent thickness of NAS1149F0463P washers), in addition to the existing washers may be used to obtain balance. Balance the shaft and impeller assembly by adding the NAS1149F0432P washer to the bolt on the high side of the impeller. Balance is achieved when the two following situations are observed: (1) You add an NAS1149F0463P washer to the light side of the assembly and a change in the balance is observed. The tail rotor driveshaft segment assemblies are accessed through the removal of two tailboom fairings. The four tail rotor driveshaft segment assemblies are connected by coupling disc packs that make allowance for tailboom movement. Each of the four tail rotor driveshaft segment assemblies are the same and are interchangeable. Each tail rotor driveshaft segment assembly is aluminum, and has an aluminum adapter flange. The six hanger bearings hold the tail rotor driveshaft segment assemblies aligned. The most aff tail rotor driveshaft segment assembly is attached to the tail rotor gearbox input adapter through a coupling disc pack. The tail rotor gearbox input adapter is part of the tail rotor gearbox. Allowance for tail rotor gearbox movement is through the coupling disc pack. Only do the tail rotor driveshaft segment assembly alignment procedure, if required, by the conditional inspection, callout in the manual, or if for any reason you think that the driveshaft is out of alignment. If the alignment is not within limits, contact product support engineering for assistance.. Start the alignment with the most aft shaft or bearing replaced. The direction of the drive is changed 90 degrees. The speed is reduced 2.53 to 1 at these gears, The tail rotor gearbox housing is made of magnesium and is attached to the tailboom with four studs, washers, nuts and two dowel pins for alignment. The tail rotor gearbox assembly includes a filler cap, oil sight gage, a breather and an electric chip detector with a self-closing valve.
