Giver Lois Lowry and 1984 George Orwel are both books talking about a social commentary in their own

way. The giver and 1984 is about a society where the government took over the population in a Totalitarianism

government style. The guiding question is about how worlds are being governed and manipulated by the people of

power so that they become sheeps and do everything that the leaders want. Social commentary is shown and

understood in the book by several different literary features. The most important once in the Giver and 1984 are tone

and symbolism. The giver and 1984 both have social commentary and this is shown in both books with tone and

symbolism.

Both Lois Lowry and George Orwell use tone in their story to make it more engaging and to help show the

social commentary happening throughout the story. Loise uses direct, reflective without being overly preachy which

creates a serious and suspenseful mood throughout the book. The Giver in the beginning is slow and confusing but

it was able to establish how society worked and how they were treated. In the middle there is some change in tone

that makes it feel like the story is faster and when a story gets faster then we can see that there is a change in how

the story was written. At the end the tone changed that when you read you read the story faster due to the words

and tone that has been used. The author did this so that the start of the book would be able to get into the story and

understand the characters. It would also help us understand how the world is run for different characters. In the

middle of the book as the author changes the tone then it affects how the story is understood and how the tone

affects how the story's perspective is told. The change in tone is a huge indicator of a change in how the story

should be read therefore when a change happens the reader is able to see and understand why the author did it that

way. For the last tone change in the book the end needs to be really important for a book and the change in tone

creates suspense so that the reader is able to feel the need to read more to get what is going to happen after.

With Lois went for a more direct approach George went more dark, pessimistic, and gloomy but in the end

they went for the same results in a very different way. 1984 was very similar to the giver in the start; it was dark but

slow. Which shows that the author was going more for a creepy and scary place. Then in the middle it went more

active and there was a little action and got a much more pessimistic type of mood. Because we see that the

character changed and that there is a whole other side that was not shown in the beginning of the book. In the end

of the book it was very gloomy when Winston Smith was part of the rebellion then got kidnapped. Tone had a huge

part in this section because there had to be an effect and needed to set a very specific mood on the readers. George

did this because it creates a sense of wanting to read more and to understand what is happening. Throughout the

book there have been several changes in the tone that the story was written in. For example, the start of the book it

was creating a sense of it being a super scary place and there was no choice because big brother was always

watching. Towards the middle of the with the addition of the pessimistic the tone really effected how the story was
being told and it added suspense. At the end of the book with the gloomy tone we felt sad but could understand that

the end of the story was super important. Even though both authors used tone to create mood they both had a very

different way of doing it and how they made mood tell the story Lois was direct while George was more dark. Their

tones were added and used in different parts of the stories for both.Throughout the whole book you can see that the

situation is changing for the main character because of the tone and therefore it shows us that there is a lot of

change happening to the society or the main character. Throughout both books the author was able to show how

social commentary happened with the tone and therefore helps us understand the social commentary happening in

the story.
