Job interview

a. ? I would be very happy to work here because I really respect the

work that this company does and I have always had a positive opinion of it. I believe that with the
skills that I have learned over the past six years in this industry, I would be an excellent person to
have on the team.

b. ? When I started, I worked as a sales rep for two years and learned
a lot during that time and went to a lot of training courses. After two years, I was promoted and
became an area manager with a small team of two other people. I did that for three years, before
moving to the job I do now. I currently manage a different area with a larger team of five people
and since I have been there, our sales have increased by 25%.

c. ? I have been with this company for six years now and I would like
to have experience with a new company and I’m looking for a new challenge. Also, I have a new
manager who started a couple of months ago and I don’t really get along with him. He’s pretty
stupid.

d. ? I’m a hard worker and enjoy learning new skills. I really love
working in sales and don’t have a problem with working as long as I need to reach my goals. I’m
good working as part of a team, but I’m happy to work by myself too.

e. ? Selling ice cream on a beach! Sun, ice cream and sales: my three
favorite things.

f. ? One of my biggest strengths is listening to customers to find out

what they need and building relationships with them.

g. ? First, I decide what are the most important tasks to deal with and
I do those first. If I’ve got a lot to do, I will get up extra early and get a head start.

h. ? I enjoy cycling and usually go for a ride on the weekend if I have time.
I’m also learning Spanish at the moment. I go to an evening class once a week. I’m still a beginner,
but I’m learning a lot quickly. I also really enjoy meeting my friends and going out for dinner with
them.

Now listen to the job interview to check your answers.

4. Ordering questions

10 mins.
This asks students to think about the grammar of question formation before asking them to use them with the
interview. Later students will have a chance to answer these questions themselves.

1. How do you deal with a large amount of work? 2. Why are you looking for work?
3. What is your dream job? 4. Why do you want to do this job?
5. What are your hobbies? 6. How would you describe yourself?
7. What are your strengths? 8. What experience do you have?
Answers to the job interview:

a. Why do you want to do this job b. What experience do you have

e. What is your dream job f. What are you good at

15 mins.
Ask students to discuss the quality of the answers to begin with and say if they are good answers and if not, why
not. Then ask students to do a mock interview in pairs or threes. Circulate and help as needed.
a. A good answer. It connects the persons experience to the reputation of the company and puts both in a positive
light.
b. A good answer. It is short, but quickly gives a lot of information about what the person has done and gives a
quick example of what they have achieved.
c. The first part of the answer is good. But it is a bad idea to say negative things about people you are working
with. It’s not professional and can make you look bad, even if what you are saying is true.
d. A good answer. It covers the strengths of working with others and alone, both of which are likely.
e. Not a good answer. It doesn’t sound very professional even if it is a nice dream. It doesn’t sound very ambitious
either.
f. This is a good answer as it focuses on something which would be important to the company.
g. A good answer because it shows self-awareness and the ability to self-manage.

h. A good answer as it shows the person is active, is still actively learning something (which could be good for the
company as it requires communication) and it shows the person has a social life which is a good sign.
