Sometimes you have the choice between two captures. Then you must first look carefully to see what the difference is between these two ways of capturing. What does your opponent do? Only then do you make up your mind. — a WeMael a | & a & ko & & zm We aa aad | ams & & & | Aw waa jp @ Se x) 2 @ a WwW aa a z we | a A Bsn & Aa RAR _& ie &ob aA 4 a & | & | Twofold attack White can capture on 5 with the bishop or with the knight. In the old days you looked at a map, nowadays you plan your route with a computer or in the car with a sat-nav. You aiso have to move pieces from one square to another ona chess board. When you do so you have to take care that your opponent can’t capture one of them. Let’s practise doing that. oS Move to the correct square ‘You have to move the highlighted piece safely to the square with the dot on it. White is the only one to move. You may not take a piece, but you must not let your piece be captured. Left: Rel-e2-a2-ad-hd Right: Ba2-£7-h5-e2 You've made it! Give check There is never more than one white piece on the board, Ithas to give check. Again, only White moves. Be careful that the piece cannot be captured on any square. Even cap- turing is not allowed, Left: Bf2-e3-e1-a3 check! Right: Re8-a8-a4-c4 check! Capture all the black pieces The white piece must capture all the black ones as quickly as possi- ble. In as few moves as possible, You may not take a piece that is protected. If, on the left, you play BaSxd8xf6xg5-d2xe3, that costs 5 moves. BaSxc3xf6xg5xd8 is quicker. Only 4. Right: Qe3xe7xg3xg6xhS. Trap the piece ‘Our opponent wants to move pie- ces round the board too. We shall stop him doing so. We can trap his piece with just one move, Left: 1. Ne3-d5 Right: 1. Rdl-d4 ‘You don’t need to attack the piece! After 1, Rdl-bl the knight can still g0 to a4, e4 or d7. a Flo a 23 Route planner Choose the safe way: A z tegen 2 2 os a e a | waste ge ae a | eeany a a2 te eo g P| ° fg) ae ae as ZZ wee | se a 2 Ae | a a AB 12 | Ae a H Be | fw e | e . a w | (4) a e . a | a ae | a 2o a 2) ga Fa a A | | & | | (2) | a a a al | a | | a 2 Bea a Aad a & 0 | wi : wl 24 Step I plus Route planner Give a safe check (in 3 moves): A a ® nae eeceioand a aa, a aa ae 2 oo terrae Dieta) = | ss = | ag | a a faa a e a | le & | x | & | | | = | x eat e w a & e 2a a ac a | fe x = 2 | | a | as w aa w | x e | a e a | e a J Route planner Give a safe check (in 3 moves): B { a wh] 2 a | | aj e 2 aw | eo | | ce | a | & | | a | x | & 2 2 | ae w ee ® x ge 2 a = | a | Ga lz a) jee Wau: | a @ 2 a | = 2 | ga a a ow 2 = i g wy é f z a | a 2 2 | w ee 2 | 2 a 2 e | x a x a x Step I plus Give a safe check (in 2 moves}: C Route planner aap a6 a Route planner Give a safe check (in 3 moves): D a e z| ® a) || % w | 2 a | la | | a | Cf | ® w w a2 2 | 2 e | e | | x a L | a | a | 2 a | 2a 4 | a 2 } Ww a | | Da a | a | a | a | £ & a 2 | x | a | | | & a e 2 xe 28 Step Iplus Trap the piece: A Trapping adn Eye a as f aq aac 29 Trap the piece: B Trapping HI « « my | « me 2) “a co) 3 a “ am 2 “ «2 |_et i “| “ BO cer eam oh Ot ea Oe ac a im “ “ @ “a a «a x 2 ps “a a a al of “ “ ad ad « 3 a“ i e aq | a | @ al g g “ ag of g « al «a a» a al “ “a agg « a “ «J af B f a= a Ff a 1 3 | <¢ 3 aae af af «a aq aid “ ee a B-<8 Ba = mei ma H On the left, the c-pawn is not yet a passed pawn.
