British Airways: Company Overview

British Airways is one of the largest airlines companies in Europe and around the world. It
was formed in 1974 and it is the flag carrier company for the United Kingdom. It experienced
rapid growth especially in the last two decades and now is one of the most prestigious
worldwide flying companies. In the beginning it was formed based on a public ownership
scheme but later it undertook a series of transformations throughout the ’70 and the ’80..
Since that time the airline boosted and, in a period when most big airlines struggled to gain
profits, it remained on top of the preferences of worldwide customers. Since that time it had
passed a turbulent era of high competition, rising oil prices (which meant cost increase) and
even financial scandals, like the 2007 fine for price-fixing. British Airways is a global airline,
bringing people, places and diverse cultures closer together for more than 100 years. Serving
our community and planet is at the heart of everything we do, and we look forward to sharing
our exciting sustainability initiatives with you.

People

Making British Airways a great place to work is a serious commitment we’re making to our
people. We’re creating a workplace that’s diverse and inclusive, gives a sense of wellbeing
and belonging and enables everyone to thrive

 Diversity and inclusion

We celebrate different perspectives, backgrounds and experiences and recognise that
diversity is a powerful force for change. We want our workforce to be more reflective
of the world we live in and the global communities we serve.
 Wellbeing
Caring for the wellbeing of our people means offering support for their mental,
physical and emotional health, helping our colleagues to feel their best at work and at
home. Our dedicated wellbeing team works closely with health services to provide
support for everyone in our business who needs it through a range of services,
including a mindfulness app and a 24-hour helpline where colleagues can speak to
trained counsellors and advisors. Establishing a network of 150 well-being and
inclusion champions and sponsors throughout the business ensures that support is
provided where it’s needed most.
 Diverse representation
We believe that our leaders should represent the diverse populations in the UK and
are committed to addressing the underrepresentation of women and minority ethnic
groups across the company, particularly in management roles.
 Inclusive workplace
Championing equitable pay and race equality, we support colleagues from different
backgrounds to progress in their careers and acknowledge the challenges we face as a
global community. Our apprenticeship and work experience programmes are designed
to encourage a diverse mix of new recruits that reflect our evolving population

Planet

 We’re driving urgent action towards net zero emissions. We have a long history of
managing and reducing our carbon emissions and a clear roadmap to achieving net
zero carbon emissions by 2050, with ambitious short, medium and long-term
initiatives to achieve our goals. We're investing in the development of sustainable
aviation fuel, zero emissions aircraft and enabling you to offset your emissions.
 Zero emissions aircraft
We support the development of hydrogen as an alternative fuel source because we
believe it has the potential to enable us to reach true zero emissions on short-haul
routes by 2050. That’s why we’ve invested in ZeroAvia – a leading innovator in
decarbonising commercial aviation. It is aiming to accelerate the development of 50+
seater aircraft capable of running on zero emissions hydrogen-electric power. In
September 2020, ZeroAvia completed the world’s first hydrogen-electric fuel cell
powered flight of a commercial-grade aircraft.
 Waste
We’re committed to protecting the environment, eliminating single-use plastic where
sustainable alternatives exist and reducing food waste. Working towards
implementing a circular economy, we aim to keep our resources in use for as long as
possible through innovative product design, re-use and recycling and through
partnerships with our suppliers.
Offset your carbon emissions

Domestic flights: Since January 2020 we’ve been offsetting carbon emissions on all our flights within
the UK, making all British Airways domestic flights carbon neutral.

International flights: We’ve partnered with non-profit organisation Pure Leapfrog so you can
calculate and offset your carbon emissions if travelling outside of the UK, making your flight carbon
neutral.

Responsible Business

 Flying Start

Flying Start is our global charity in partnership with Comic Relief, helping to give
disadvantaged young people a chance to have a brighter future. Thanks to the generosity of
our colleagues and customers, Flying Start has raised more than £26 million, helping more
than 800,000 disadvantaged young people in the UK and around the world have the best
possible start in life. In the past three years, we’ve raised more than £2 million alone for early
childhood development projects in the UK, India, South Africa and Ghana. These projects
include community-based health and education services, as well as providing support to
families with young children.

 Noise and local air quality

We’re committed to minimising the impact of noise from our aircraft on local communities
by investing in new aircraft that have half the noise footprint, training our pilots to follow
quieter approach and departure procedures and regularly monitoring the noise performance of
our aircraft fleet. We also engage with regulators, airports, communities and other
stakeholders to explore opportunities to reduce the noise of our operations. We record and
report our sustainability performance, including levels of carbon emissions and noise.

 Helping communities respond in times of crisis

Our partnership with the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) ensures that vital relief gets
to where it’s needed, as soon as possible. The DEC brings together 14 leading UK aid
agencies to raise money when there’s a humanitarian crisis. By working together as a
member of the DEC’s Rapid Response Network, we raise funds to save, protect, and rebuild
lives in vulnerable communities that are impacted by major disasters. Since 2013, we’ve
raised more than £1.5 million to help people affected by humanitarian crises through our
work with the DEC. We also work with other humanitarian organisations to help relief
workers get where they need to be, and in partnership with IAG Cargo, shipments of
lifesaving supplies.

 BA Better World Community Fund

Our new BA Better World Community Fund delivers life-changing opportunities in the
communities we serve, enabling us to support projects that deliver benefits for climate,
communities, our colleagues and nature. It also enables us to deploy our people and resources
to help communities affected by crisis.

Sustainability Governance
Our British Airways Better World sustainability strategy is aligned to IAG’s vision to be the
leading airline group on sustainability and is embedded in British Airways' delivery groups. It
is also aligned to two global frameworks: the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the
World Economic Forum’s stakeholder capitalism framework for consistent reporting of
sustainable value creation.

We have a robust internal governance framework that extends from the Board of our parent
company IAG through to British Airway’s Management Committee and into deliver groups.
Our ESG performance data is independently audited as part of our Group Annual Report and
Accounts process in addition to our own compliance audits.
