Bikaner, Rajasthan, INDIA Department of Obste Rajasthan Agriculture Unive INTRODUCTION 1 infertility conditions which adversly 3 . prolongs service period and calving” ‘Anestrus is one of the economy as it delays age at first calving ; 7 interval. Progestagens have been used coral feeding, parenteral injections, vrpcuaneous and. vaginal implants. Vaginal implants ate convenient for use” and Tenure minimum of efforts, Progesagen implants are new introduction to the arid ‘rea and hence a preliminary trial conducted and reported. Fi MATERIALS AND METHODS Study comprised of 17 acyclic eross bred cows belonging to the Livestock research station Bikaner. Acyclic pubertal heifers and post partum cows not exhibi 100 - 150 days post partum and having smooth inactive ovaries were Cows and 5 heifers were implanted with CIDR - B- ( Inter Ag. Hamilton NZ containing 1.9 gms of Progesterone ) which was removed after 9 days, when 1000 LU. of PMSG ( Intervet, Holland ) was administered IM . Estrus was monitored, closely and recorded. Blood was collected every 3-4 th day from the day of = implant withdrawl till 40 days. Plasma was separated and stored at -20 °C ill assay. Plasma progesterone was estimated using liquid phase radio immuno assay, described by Kamboj and Prakash ( 1993 ) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION It is clear from the Table that all the treated 7 cows and 5 heifers were induced 10.” estrus with a mean interval of 3.5 and 2.2 clays compared to 60 % in control. The overall conception rates were 28.5 % . 60 % and 40 % for treated cows, heifers, 2 and untreated controls respectively. The pregnancy rate was low and the results simulate with those of Kupfer Sehiied et al ( 1979 ) 3 ‘The plasma progesterone profiles for treated cows are presented in figures 1, 2 and at the time of implant withdraw! occured indicative s clear from 886 ocanned witn va and conception is presented int sen implant on estan induction eftect of prop. Delayed and less pronounced peaks indicate cither lack of ovulation, formation of weak corpora lutea of Iculinisation of unovulated folicles. Transient peaks depict improper cyclicity. It can be scen that although the response of the treatment was 100 % effective in inducing estrus in cows and heifers but there was an individual variation in the ovulatory response and further resumption of normal cyclicity, controls amon 1s mor pronounced REFERENCES Cleef, J Van; Lucy,M.C.; Wilcox CJ. and Thatcher W.W.
