Good day everyone, im heart Coloma a student nurse.

And for today I will be

doing the ophthalmic medication administration or the ear drop
administration.
Before proceeding, make sure to gather all the equipment needed to save time
and effort. Also make sure to check each medication order and determine the
kind of drugs to be administered, to practice patient safety.

Don’t forget to wear medication vest as per institution. So let’s just assume
that I am already wearing a medication vest.

Prepare medication for one patient at a time. Read the medication

administration record and compare the label with the medication
administration record to ensure that you have the right drug, right dose, right
time and right route.
Make sure that you explain the procedure to the client and support as needed
to rightly inform the patient and to address any clarifications.
Before we proceed, perform hand hygiene for infection control and after that
wear a pair of disposable clean gloves to avoid direct contact to the eye of the
patient.

Assess the patency of the ear dropper to avoid any possible wastage of the
medication
Instruct the client to place his or her head on a counter or examining table with
the affected ear upward to allow good visualization of the ear canal
Instill the medication with a dropper while the patient is lying with the affected
ear uppermost. Pull the outer ear to adjust the outer canal for best access, for
patients above 3 years old up to adults pull the pinna up and back.
Instruct the client to remain in side lying position for at least 5 minutes to allow
maximum and ensures proper absorption.
Insert a small piece of cotton fluff loosely at the meatus for at least 15-20
minutes without pressing into the ear canal to prevent seepage of the
medication.

Remove your gloves and discard the materials, then perform hand hygiene for
infection control purposes.
Document the procedure for proper documentation.
