1. Introduction
1.1 Let’s Begin Tests and Quizzes is designed to test
students using the Let’s Go 3rd Edition Let’s Begin
Level. As you and your students work through the
units, the tests and quizzes in this book will help en-
sure students have absorbed and mastered the mate-
rials presented in the Let’s Begin Student Book and
Work Book. These tests will also help you objectively
evaluate and grade your students.
1.2 The tests and quizzes are easy to administer and
match the language and skills objectives of Let’s
Begin. Each test and quiz type, and the question
components that make up each type, are explained
below. Look for the i symbol for suggestions on
time limits and administering as well as marking/
grading the tests and quizzes.
1.3 We hope you enjoy using these tests and quizzes
and find them a useful teaching tool for your young
learners.
2. Test and Quiz Types
2.1 There are six different types of Let’s Begin Tests and
Quizzes: Lesson Quizzes, Unit Tests, Let’s Learn
About Quizzes, Review Tests, a Midterm Test, and
a Final Test.
2.2 Lesson Quizzes
The Let’s Begin Student Book consists of eight main
units and four review units. Each main unit contains
five sections: Let’s Start, Let’s Learn, Let’s Learn More,
The Alphabet, and Let’s Build. Let’s Start sections intro-
duce a simple dialogue. Let’s Learn sections introduce
new terms and simple commands; Let’s Learn More
adds to that material. The Alphabet section gradually
introduces the alphabet, three or four letters per unit.
The Let’s Build section provides an added challenge
to students, combining material learned in the earlier
sections of the unit.
Lesson Quizzes, each one page, match the content of
those unit sections, such as Lesson Quiz 1.1 Let’s Start,
Lesson Quiz 1.2 Let’s Learn, and so on. There are 39 Les-
son Quizzes in total.
i The Lesson Quizzes are generally pre-writing quiz-
zes using matching, circling, tracing, checking and
coloring, at times combined with listening to an

quizzes, where students are asked to write the nu-
merals 1 to 10. Lesson Quizzes can be completed
within five minutes. They could easily be adminis-
tered at the beginning of class as a form of review
or warm-up for the upcoming lesson. Most Les-
son Quizzes have only an A part, while some have
parts A and B. Answers for each Lesson Quiz vary
from two to four. For grading purposes, one or two
points could be awarded for each answer.
2.3 Unit Tests
The two-page Unit Tests match the content of a complete
unit, covering all five sections from Let’s Start to Let’s
Build. There are eight Unit Tests.
i Unit Tests contain pre-writing questions involving
matching, checking, coloring or circling, at times
combined with listening to an audio script. Unit
Tests can be completed within 10 minutes. As with
Lesson Quizzes, a Unit Test could be administered
at the beginning of class as a form of review. Each
Unit Test consists of three or four parts, from A to C
or D. Answers range from two to four. For grading
purposes, one or two points could be awarded for
each answer.
2.4 Let’s Learn About Quizzes
The one-page Let’s Learn About Quizzes match the
content of the Let’s Learn About page at the end of
Units 2, 4, 6, and 8. There are four Let’s Learn About
Quizzes: School Supplies, Classroom Commands, The
Weather, and Days of the Week.
i Let’s Learn About Quizzes contain matching ques-
tions that can be completed within five minutes. A
Let’s Learn About Quiz could be administered at the
beginning of class immediately following the Let’s
Learn About lesson. Each Let’s Learn About Quiz
has a Part A requiring four answers. One or two
points could be awarded for each answer.
2.5 Review Tests
Two-page Review Tests match the content of two com-
plete units. Review Test 1 covers Units 1 and 2; Review
Test 2, Units 3 and 4; Review Test 3, Units 5 and 6; and
Review Test 4, Units 7 and 8.
i Review Test questions use matching or listening
combined with checking, coloring, or circling. Re-
view Tests can be completed within ten minutes.

 They could serve as part of a formal review of the
previous two units. Each Review Test has three
parts, A, B, and C, each with four answers. One or
two points could be awarded for each answer.
2.6 Midterm Test
The four-page Midterm Test matches the content of
Units 1 to 4.
i The Midterm Test has matching, checking, listen-
ing, and writing (numerals 1–10) questions in five
parts, A, B, C, D, and E. Requiring a total 21 an-
swers, it can be completed within 30 minutes. The
Midterm Test should be given as part of a formal
review of Units 1 to 4. One or two points could be
awarded for each answer.
2.7 Final Test
The six-page Final Test, matching the content of Units
1 to 8, provides a comprehensive test for all of Let’s
Begin.
i The Final Test has matching and listening ques-
tions in seven parts, A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. With
a total of 31 answers, it can be completed in 30 to
45 minutes. The Final Test should be given as part
of a formal review of all of Let’s Begin. One or two
points could be awarded for each answer.
3. Question Types
There are three main types of questions in Let’s Begin
Tests and Quizzes:
3.1 Matching Questions
Matching Questions ask students to connect two imag-
es. Some Matching Questions also ask students to check,
circle, or write (numerals 1–10) the correct answer.
3.2 ✓ or ✗ Questions
✓ or ✗ Questions ask students to ✓ or ✗ multiple choices.
3.3 Listening Questions
(Audio for Listening Questions can be found on the
Let’s Go website at www.oup.com/elt/letsgo/). Lis-
tening Questions ask students to listen to an audio
script and then select the correct answer from multiple
choices. Listening Questions also ask students to color,
circle, or check the correct answer. The audio for these
questions is presented at natural speed.
4. Answer Keys and Audio Scripts
4.1 Answer Keys and Audio Scripts are provided for
all tests and quizzes.

4.2 Every question has a corresponding answer in the
Answer Key. A brief explanation of how to read the
key is provided at the top of each Answer Key and
Audio Script page. It is recommended that teachers
review the Answer Key and Audio Script before ad-
ministering a test or quiz to familiarize themselves
with the questions and anticipate any challenges stu-
dents may have with the materials.
5. Audio
5.1 The following tests and quizzes include Listen-
ing Questions: Lesson Quizzes, Unit Tests, Review
Tests, the Midterm Test, and the Final Test.
5.2 Every Listening Question has a corresponding au-
dio clip that can be found on the Let’s Go website
at www.oup.com/elt/letsgo/. There are 36 audio
clips in total, each clearly marked in the Answer
Key beside the corresponding audio script. Please
remember to cue the correct audio clip in prepara-
tion for administering any tests or quizzes. Promo-
tional CDs containing this material may be available
in some countries. Please contact your local Oxford
University Press office for more information.
5.3 If you do not have access to the Let’s Go 3rd Edi-
tion Let’s Begin Level audio clips, you can still ad-
minister the listening portion of the tests or quiz-
zes. Here are some suggestions:
• Read the audio script out loud to your students.
If possible, use a native-English speaker’s natural
pace, intonation, and pronunciation and read the
audio script only once.
• Have another teacher read the audio script out
loud. This gets your students used to listening
to different people speaking English. Remind the
other teacher to use a native-English speaker’s
natural pace, intonation, and pronunciation and
read the audio script only once.
• Pre-record the audio script. You can record your-
self or someone else reading the audio script. Re-
member to use a native-English speaker’s natural
pace, intonation, and pronunciation and read the
audio script only once.
5.4 Listening Questions are an important part of a com-
prehensive evaluation of how well your students
are learning the materials they are being taught.
Therefore, it is highly recommended that you not
skip the listening portions, or any other compo-
nents, of Let’s Begin Tests and Quizzes.
