Jewish War (struck 66/67
AD) and the prototype shekel

The quality and range of
the coins of the Bar Kochba
Revolt are remarkable. The
collection also contains two
beautiful examples of the
menorah/showbread table
coin struck under Mattatayah
Antigonus (40-37 BC) the
last of the Hasmonean kings.
Just as impressive are several
extremely rare Herodian
Dynasty coins, several of
which I have seen only a
few times over more than 40
years. The array of city coins
is also impressive. Testimony
to the rarity and the quality
of the coins in the Shoshana
collection is that so many
of them have been used to
illustrate standard references
or have come from important
collections such as Abraham
Bromberg and the late Teddy
