1. Who translated the bible from its original languages (Greek and
Hebrew) to early modern English?
a. Erasmus
b. John Wycliffe
c. King James
d. William Tyndale
ANS: TYNDALE
The original languages of the Bible were written in Greek, Hebrew, and
Aramaic. Although John Wycliffe was the first one to translate in English,
Wycliffe and his fellow translators worked from the standard Catholic Bible
in Latin, whereas Tyndale and Coverdale used Erasmus’s recently
published Greek New Testament as the source.
William Tyndale also had access to original languages, thanks to the work
of Erasmus who had published a Greek New Testament and a Hebrew Old
Testament. There was considerable interest at the time in finding more
accurate translations. Wycliffe only had the Latin Vulgate available, which
was itself a translation.
a. The Quran
b. The Book of Mormon
c. The Gutenberg Bible
d. Siddur, Jewish Prayer Book
• The Gutenberg Bible is the first substantial book printed in the West
with moveable metal type. Before its printing in 1454 or 1455, books
were either copied by hand or printed from engraved wooden blocks
—processes that could take months or years to complete. Johann
Gutenberg invented a printing press that revolutionized the
distribution of knowledge by making it possible to produce many
copies of a work in a relatively short amount of time.
