Advising Narrative 2019

I currently advise eighteen students, the majority of which are freshman and sophomore
biology majors interested in careers in the health professional field. I meet with each student
the week before he or she is scheduled to sign up for the upcoming semester’s classes and we
discuss their future plans and which courses are required to meet fulfill their degree
requirements.

Degrees in STEM fields are relatively inflexible due to the nature of so many foundational
courses, such as general chemistry, general biology, calculus, physics, etc. However, I have been
able to suggest unique electives geared towards my individual advisees’ interests as well as
encourage them to balance their schedules with non-major classes to facilitate completion of
their liberal arts component of the degree.

Advising offers an opportunity to meet with students one on one and I look forward to
continuing getting to know my current and future advisees in the years to come.
