“Walk to school” challenge
The organisation Living Streets is responsible for the greatest national Walk to
School celebration, where students and grown-ups around the UK unite for one week of
walking to school. The challenge lasts the entire month of October. If you manage to do
it, you win a shopping voucher. Cheryl Stevens, a twelve-year-old student from
Manchester got it! She is about to tell you how:

My walking week

Getting started… I only live 1.5 km away from my school, but my mother
drives me every day! It’s not ideal, I know, but I can sleep longer. Walking to my
school takes about 20 minutes.
On Monday morning… Oh, no! My alarm clock goes off at 7:30 a.m., so early!
I don’t usually get up before 8:30 a.m. I only have time to eat a quick snack for breakfast and
I arrive at school at 9:00.
On Tuesday morning… I wash my hair, but I don’t have time to finish drying it. And… and
it’s raining outside, which means my morning walk to school is wet!
On Wednesday morning… I have PE and music today, so this means I have to carry three
bags today. Oh… my poor arms and back!
On Thursday morning… it’s a nice day! I feel happy walking to school today! I feel more
awake and it’s good to exercise.
On Friday morning… I take an extra snack with me and I stop to feed Star, my neighbour’s
dog… I still arrive on time!
After the challenge I realised I like walking. I now walk to school every day, except on
Wednesdays (too many bags ).
