CIRCUMFERENCE AND PERIMETER

Circles and parts of circles are found in many different shapes and designs. To calculate the perimeters
of these shapes you need to calculate the circumference of circles.

TASK 1 Measure the dimensions

By making your own measurements and using a formula for the circumference of a circle, calculate the
perimeter of each of these shapes. You will need to round your answer to a sensible value.

1 2 Semicircle

3 Quadrant 4

TASK 2 Use given measurements

Use the given measurements to determine the perimeter of each shape. Be careful to check whether
you are using the diameter or the radius of the arcs.

1 This shape was created using five semicircles. The radius of the large semicircle is 20 cm.

2 All arcs are parts of a circle.

EXTENSION

Six pipes, each with a diameter of 30 cm, are bundled together and tied
with fibreglass tape. The tape is joined by an overlap of 4 cm.

What is the length of the tape? Justify your answer.
