Introduction
This Special Instruction contains information and procedures for Caterpillar Replacement Thread Inserts. Master kits, repair kits, and refill kits are
included in this Special Instruction.

Part Numbers for Repair Kits and Part Numbers for Refill Kits
Information in this Special Instruction is adaptable to the 9S-3500 Insert Repair Kit for standard fine thread and the 9S-3700 Insert Repair Kit for
standard coarse thread. This Special Instruction also includes information for the 247-9662 Insert Repair Kit for thread size M6-M12 and the 247-
9663 Insert Repair Kit for thread size M6-M24.

1. Use drill (1) in order to drill out the old threads. Refer to table 2 for the proper drill size that corresponds with the correct thread insert.

2. Use tap (2) in order to tap the new threads. Refer to table 2 for the proper size of tap that corresponds with the correct thread insert.

3. Install insert (3).

Note: In order to position thread insert (3) correctly, the top of thread insert (3) should be slightly below surface (A).

This is a view of thread insert (3) that is installed.

4. Use insert driver (4) in order to seat four locking tabs (B). The appropriate insert driver is included in the kit.

1. Use drill (5) in order to drill out thread insert (3). Refer to table 3 for the appropriate drill size .

2. Use punch (6) in order to break off pins (C).

3. Use a 4C-3382 Extractor Set (7) in order to remove thread insert (3).

4. Remove any debris from the threaded hole after removing the old thread insert.

5. Install new thread insert (8) into the original hole. Refer to this Special Instruction, "Installation of Caterpillar Replacement Thread Inserts" for
the installation of the thread insert.
