AZING ACROSS AN EXPANSE of fertile Imperial Valley land,


G Californian Bob Topham was obviously pleased with what
he saw. Three INTERNATIONAL trucks advanced over soft acreage
under cultivation just north of the Mexican border. Bearing the
corporate decals of "Topham & Sons," the dieselized six-wheel-
ers bent to their ofF-highway chore with relative ease. They rolled
along, side by side, on high flotation, wide base tires. From the
DCOF-405 models' 21-foot bodies spewed a steady "backwash"
of soil-enriching fertilizer, applied in 12-foot-wide swaths by
each vehicle's spinner and spreader gear.
Topham & Sons' specialized DCOF-405 trucks take fertilizer loads
from valley's cattle pens to fields and spread 10 to 30 tons per acre.

Sun-bronzed Topham is one of some 60,000 people who


work below sea level in an agriculturally-rich desert oasis. Once
the bottom of an ancient inland sea, the garden spot's 450,000
irrigated acres comprise the nation's fifth most productive farm-
ing area. The average annual income from Imperial Valley crops,
plus livestock feeding, exceeds $166 million!
Hardly uncommon therefore are such Imperial Valley sights
as those which feature the bustling Topham truck fleet. For this
Southern California wonderland represents a healthy economic
stake for Topham and hosts of other agriculture-related business-
men who live immediately south of America's lowest-down
"lake"—the Salton Sea (244 feet below sea level). They are
farmers, producemen, cattlemen, shippers, farm machinery
dealers and fertilizer men, laboring at what little more than half
a century ago was an arid expanse of sand dunes and sagebrush.
Now it's regarded as the agricultural marvel of the 20th century,
fed by Colorado River waters which are relayed 80 miles through
the AU-American Canal directly to the farmland's irrigation
network.
That's roughly the portrait of a place that produces some-
thing like 80 per cent of the nation's lettuce. Along with it are
extraordinary crop yields of carrots, sugar beets, cotton, barley,
melons, flax, alfalfa hay, sorghum, tomatoes and seed crops.
And because the Imperial Valley is new, as farm regions go, the
hand of the past is light. Ingenious new devices, products of

of 260,000 tons of steer manure for Topham. The customized

CROSS A BROAD STRETCH of Western New York, once


A I- peopled by the most formidable Indian power of frontier
times, there strides nowadays a proud and mighty Iroquois
of a different species.
"Iroquois Gas Corporation" is the reliable, jet-age stalwart.
Its reservation: a booming, 20,000-square-mile expanse known
as the Niagara Frontier. Here, upwards of 370,000 customers —
residential, commercial and industrial — are the beneficiaries of
Iroquois' wondrous service. Through 6,636 miles of mains, the
Buffalo-headquartered enterprise supplies gas for space heating,
cooking, air conditioning, to turn industrial wheels, and for
other uses too numerous to mention. It's a prodigious network;
consumption is enormous! Iroquois' daily output runs as high
as 700 million cubic feet. It's piped to a far-flung territory em-
bracing Buffalo, Niagara Falls and 111 other Empire State com-
munities. Seventy-five per cent is natural gas, mostly originating
in the Southwest. The remainder is a high B.T.U. mixed product,
pumped only to consumers of Lake Erie's principal port city
and environs. Diversified 661 -unit Iroquois fleet includes METRO-MITE trucks, like this CM-80.
Obviously the Iroquois profile is striking. That holds,
whether it's viewed from the multi-storied Buffalo "tepee,"
where President H. D. Clay oversees the system, or in the
field —sizing up the mighty 661-unit array of Iroquois trans-
portation and work equipment. The truck roster ranges upward
from all-wheel-drive SCOUT runabouts, pickups for service calls
and meter work and bin-equipped METRO-MITE trucks, to
CO-205 truck-tractors which draw floats and lowboy trailers.
Also fielded are flatbeds and vans for handling gas pipe and
appliances, TRAVELETTE units, beefy transports fitted with Crew
Cabs, INTERNATIONAL trucks mounting backhoes and more.
But impressive as are the fleet operations, they are hardly
any more spectacular than those practiced elsewhere in New
York, and in neighboring Pennsylvania, by Iroquois corporate

ence Anson Garrett, 73, and a brother,
now deceased, and c o u s i n set the
pioneering precedent for today's long-
hauling titan in the days when horse-
drawn wagons were the flavor of life in
Pocatello.
More important is the blossoming na-
ture of Garrett contemporary fortunes.
They seem to grow more impressive by
the month. Pushing out like spokes of a
wheel radiating from the Pocatello hub,
Garrett routes lace Washington, Oregon,
California, Nevada, Idaho, Montana,
Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico,
North Dakota and Minnesota. The con-

tional data, equally significant. Suffice it

has tons and tons, are finally giving truth to the ringmaster's
superlative — "pampered pachyderms." The beasts are es-
corted across the show circuit by a DCOF-405 INTERNATIONAL

earth of northern Alabama in an
attempt to reach the moon. They are
neither lunatics nor fools headed in the
wrong direction. These people are labor-
ing for the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration, sinking a big hole
at the George C. Marshall Space Flight
Center. It's at Huntsville.
This gaping cavity in planet Earth is
gobbling-up thousands of cubic yards of
concrete to become the solid pad of a
rocket test stand. Ultimately it will take
the fiery punishment of a 7.5-million-
p o u n d thrust from the exhaust of a
Saturn V—the moon rocket booster.
Conceived to provide the U.S. with un-
precedented rocket power, the fantastic
Saturn family is being fabricated in the
disarmingly bucolic Alabama setting.
If, as hoped, an American astronaut
lands on the lunar target within this
decade, he will have the Bama Transit
Mixed Concrete Co., Inc., to thank—
among the hundreds of cooperating firms
that helped "pave" his road to the moon.

smiled George C. Freeman, "aren't just
star gazing." Freeman is vice president
and general manager of the Birmingham
concern. Peter Vredenburgh IV, chief
executive of Bama, explained that the
company is also pouring the foundation,
pillars and floors for buildings which will
house scientists, administrators and Army
rocket trainees.

exceeding $1 billion, is the largest NASA
organization. It is directed by fabled Dr.
Wernher von Braun and its main current
mission is to provide heavy space vehicles
for manned exploration of the moon. The
center's past accomplishments have in-
cluded the launching of the Free World's
first satellites of the earth and sun, and the
launching of the first American into space.
It's when the booster engines let loose
with the roaring flames from kerosene and
liquid oxygen propellants, and struggle to
escape their restraining test stands, that
outsiders "."know" what the Huntsville in-
stallation is "all about." And certainly,
for miles around, they will hear the earth-
shaking sound when the Saturn V engine
is developed to testing stage. It will have
five times the thrust of the Saturn I power
plants now soaring up, preparatory to the
planned three-man orbital attempt.
Saturn V is expected to carry a 45-ton
payload off the earth, place it in orbit, and
kick it on into the outer void toward the
moon. It's a great push that will need a
captive test stand like Bama is pouring.
