cordially invites you to

an evening with

Dr. Julian Bussgang

introducing his new translation of

yd Polski-onierz Polski (1939-1945) Polish Jew-Polish Soldier

Edited by Hugo Schlesinger and Stanisaw Borkowski

The booklet yd Polski - onierz Polski (1939-1945) Polish Jew - Polish Soldier was first published in 1945 under the direction of Rabbi Nathan Rbner, Jewish chaplain of the 2nd Corps of the Polish Army in Italy.

The objective of the booklet was to memorialize the valor and brave deeds of Jewish soldiers who fought during World War II in the Underground, partisan units and in the Polish Army, both inside Poland and abroad. It also honors those who battled in the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, in which Jewish volunteers joined Polish insurgents.

The new booklet, published in 2010 by the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, contains both the original Polish text and its English translation by Dr. Julian Bussgang. ________________________________________

Dr. Julian Bussgang was born in 1925 in Lww, Poland, now Lviv, Ukraine. In mid-September 1939 he fled with his parents and sister to Romania and then to Palestine. After finishing a Polish refugee high school in Tel Aviv, he joined the Polish 2nd Corps and fought in the Italian campaign, including the Battle of Monte Cassino. He came to the United States in 1949.

Bussgang received his B.Sc. from University of London, MSEE from MIT, and Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard University. After retirement from the electronics industry, he served in Warsaw and Krakw as a volunteer with the American organization IESC (International Executive Service Corps), helping privatize Polish industrial firms.

Bussgang and his wife, Fay, have translated two volumes of wartime accounts of Jewish child survivors of the Holocaust still living in Poland, The Last Eyewitnesses: Children of the Holocaust Speak (Northwestern University Press 1998 & 2005). Voices on Korea Symposium: ROK Inside-out: Korea's Domestic Policies Influence on Asia Wednesday, August 17, 1:00-2:00 p.m. Korea Economic Institute 1800 K Street NW Suite 1010 Washington, DC 20006 Register: http://www.keia.org/rsvp.php?event=PRG10322

Join us for a luncheon discussion as KEI holds its first Emerging Voices on Korea Symposium. As part of its continuing efforts to highlight new thinkers on Korea, KEI has selected a group of talented students to present and develop their research interests. All presenters and papers were recommended by leading Asia professors and selected from an international pool. The second session of the symposium will focus on the South Koreas domestic policies and some potential impact for its foreign relations. South Korea is proud of its development from an aid receiving country to a nation that provides development assistance to others. Its economic relationship with the U.S. played an important role in that process. Emerging as a modern country and a developed economy, Korea then emphasized reform of its legal system and profession. This internal reform combined with its overall national development enhanced Koreas role in the world. Soon its national identity, how its people view themselves and their place in the world, became an influential factor in South Koreas internal dynamics and also permeates its foreign relations. With the emergence of a rising China, along with Koreas historical tensions with Japan, the emanation and evolution of Koreas national identity will be key factors in its policy toward Northeast Asia. The second part of the symposium features four students working factors influencing South Korean domestic and foreign policy who will present their papers, followed by an engaging discussion. We hope you can attend and participate in the development of new ideas and emerging voices on Korea. Come and be part of this unforgettable evening and witness live body painting and digital photo exhibit by a team of DCs best artists. ADRIENNE MILLS weaves a magical brush with her camera and her creative mind. She manages to do that not only as a photographer, but also as a body painter. Bored with paper canvases during her figure painting and drawing classes, she ventured into painting on people. Human canvases seemed to magically transform ordinary paint into live art. These images, souvenirs of the enigmatic conversion from being human to being art, allow a voyeuristic glimpse of the momentary metamorphosis. Adrienne is a graduate of the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC. Her work has been widely exhibited in the Mid Atlantic region including the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Smithsonians Anacostia Museum. Mills works deal with opening new avenues in the world of contemporary photography that include a powerful element of painting and performance. Her models are her canvasses and her photographs are her powerful contributions to the dialogue of contemporary art. http://figurephotos.com/ EKATERINA KRUPKO This is how I can filter the reality, a special way to exist and relate my ego to the world that contains me. Ekaterina is a graduate of Kaliningrad art school and currently a

student at a Moscow State University of Technology and Management. She has progressed from viewing gorgeous landscapes of her native Baltic Sea and Kurische split to making sketches in the open air like impressionist and post impressionists who she greatly admires. Ekaterina is also the founder of an art group Feetsteps on the sand, which has showcased at different exhibitions in Russia as well as has been part of a number of international projects in Poland, Lithuania, Germany and Sweden. As she further develops her skills, her canvases vary and her latest achievements are in body painting. http://www.artween.com/Art?ists/Ekaterina-Krupko JABIOUS BAM WILLIAMS - A Washington, D.C. native, Jabious BAM Williams, is completely selftaught. His style is marked by extremely detailed and expressive with color placement that capture moods and emotions most other artists can only hope to imitate. His natural talents give him the ability to bring out a depth and warmth that has enchanted critics art enthusiasts alike. What makes Jabious BAM Williams art and photography unique and vastly different is that his painted project is personal nature using a three dimensional effect that you simply have to see it to believe. For more then ten years, Jabious Bam Williams has worked diligently to master his gifted talent by expressing, in canvas and body painting incorporating digital art and photography, deeply imbedded spiritual experiences and involvement with people. www.facebook.com/jabious-b?am-williams-artphotograph?y BEAU YOUNG PRINCE - incorporates a sundry of topics into his music ranging from politics and worldly issues, to what it means to be prep, young, and driven to succeed in society today. Beaus music is reminiscent of a young kid finding his path in life, and loops you into his thoughts, hopes, and aspirations. He is a jack of all trades, perfecting the art of dance, rap, singing, and even producing many of his own songs. After the release of his new project The Reverse Effect Beau Young Prince has earned top slots on many blog and music sites. https://www.facebook.com/Y?oungPrinceDC Pop Up Shop, a brand new record label based out of DC, aims to discover talented artists and help them attain their dreams by working together towards a common goal. https://www.facebook.com/p?ages/Pop-Up-Shop-Records/ DJ HAMMOND - began his career unofficially several years ago in South Carolina with DJ Andres Catlla. Proving the South was too small for him, and his appetite for adventure too great, Hammond relocated to Washington DC in March of 2008 to officially become The District's DJ 'Ambassador of Fun'. Since moving to the city, he adopted the DJ booth as his new home and spins a variety of house music genres including but not limited to deep, funky, and soulful house. Justice Center 617 Florida Avenue NW Shaw/Howard University Metro (yellow/green line)
Watch the preview! Cuba: An African Odyssey tells the story of the Cold War through its least known theatre: Africa. Soon after the Cuban revolutionaries' victory in 1959, Africas young revolutionaries, led by Lumumba, Cabral and Neto, asked Cubas freedom fighters for help in their battle against colonial domination. Cuba played a key role in Africas struggle for liberation.

From Che Guevaras work in the Congo to the triumphant Battle of Cuito Cuanavale in Angola, Cuba: An African Odyssey tells a crucial piece of the story behind the so-called Cold War, shows the true meaning of international solidarity and sheds light on the current dynamic in Africa. U.S. Debt and the Millennials: Is Washington Creating a Lost Generation?

moderated by

Dan Mitchell
Cato Institute It is a tumultuous time to be a young American. The national debt is accruing at a record pace, more than doubling in the past decade to reach $14.6 trillion today, and future liabilities threaten to drive government spending even higher. Job growth has been tepid, with unemployment persistently over 9 percent. For soon-to-be college graduates and early professionals looking to find jobs and plot their futures, many are at a loss for what to expect and how to move forward. How will mounting deficits impact todays young people in the years to come? Some argue that government spending is necessary to ensure the future by providing school loans, unemployment insurance, infrastructure investments, and other social provisions. Others hold that government spending cripples the future due to massive welfare commitments, misaligned economic incentives, and polluted market signals. Join us to hear from a panel of young wonks and journalists as they discuss the pending outlook for Millennials.

Please Join us: "Fall and Rise"

The Solo Show of Joe Iurato

Show end date: September 12 Opening Reception Saturday, August 20, 8:00-11:00 p.m. Art Whino Gallery 120 American Way National Harbor, MD 20745

The event is FREE and open to the public. At a very young age, were taught that if we fall down trying to accomplish something we should get back up and try again. Learning to walk is a perfect example, as the bumps and bruises from repeatedly collapsing to the ground soon give way to smiles and a

newfound independence in mobility. Nobody just hands us the key to walking. We earn it. Each and every one of us, regardless of the social or economical status were born into, earns it. Maybe we cant recall how good it felt the day we made it across the living room floor on our own two feet, but in life, well have plenty other opportunities to reach our rewards as we stumble, fall and fight like hell to get back up.

As we get older, the falls we take are usually harder, often unexpected, and more difficult to recover from. Rather than leave scars on our hands and knees, they leave us bleeding emotionally. More importantly, what we do afterward can determine the course of our lives moving forward. The work for Joes Fall and Rise examines the fall and the moment of self restoration and enlightenment upon picking oneself up, as opposed to falling back down and falling apart.

About the Artist

:01 represents one second. In times of adversity, it only takes a single second to decide youre going to pick yourself up and move forward in a positive direction, regardless of the circumstances involved. :01 means never give up. Stay the course. Believe in who you are. Embrace the next challenge and begin a new chapter.

Joes art can be found in both public spaces and in galleries. His stenciling technique, which he describes as drawing with an Exacto blade, is completely his own, and its evidenced within the styling of his works. His cuts are proportionate and clean, yet painterly and imperfect. His subject matter varies according to his daily inspirations, from large-scale portraits of children recognizing their importance to society and this planets future; to faceless characters that appear at a crossroads somewhere in between victory and defeat; to people floating and drifting away with elation and self restoration; and to his more recent textural paintings of ropes and chains, things that Joe finds symbolic of strength and unity, rather than restraint and oppression. Regardless of the subject matter, Joes adamant about creating socially conscious work that speaks to the times.

Neshama Soulworks Studio and Beanetics Coffee Roasters present "The Evolution of Art" Series featuring "A Retrospective of Three Artists": Paintings by Yolanda Saenz-Atkins, Cindi Kurtz, and Sabiha Malik
through September 2, 2011

Meet the Artists: Sunday, August 21, 2011 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Where & When: BEANETICS Coffee Roasters

7028 Columbia Pike Annandale, VA 22003 (703)941-4506 through September 2, 2011

Artists' Statement:

We are three artists who inspire each other; we have been painting together for 8 years. We paint as a way to express ourselves; at the same time, we believe we create art that is pleasing to the "eye of the beholder." We paint to express our thoughts, feelings, and ideas about the beauty of the colorful world around us. We like the observer to visit the places or view the objects we paint.

About the Artists:

Yolanda Saenz-Atkins was born in Brownsville, Texas. In 1972 she moved to northern Virginia and, after receiving a degree in Early Childhood Education at George Mason University, began teaching kindergarten/first grade at Kings Park Elementary in Springfield. After teaching for 15 years, she retired from the Fairfax County Public Schools. In 2006 she found the time to embark on a journey toward developing her love and passion for the arts. She found support and guidance when she met Nancy Jung, her art teacher and mentor. After three years of studying under Nancy's tutelage, she has developed a creative body of work using a variety of techniques-but mostly using her favorite medium, oils. In addition to painting and playing with her grandchildren, Yolanda stays active in her community by serving as president of the Friends of Pohick Library. She plans to continue her work as an artist by exploring and expressing her creativity through her paintings.

Cindi Kurtz took 2 years off work when her husband was stationed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio in 1999. She finally had the time to join Brush and Pallette, where she learned charcoal , pastels, and watercolor. When she moved back to northern Virginia, she started taking oil classes with Nancy Jung in 2002 and has been there ever since! "It truly is my therapy!"

Sabiha Malik has a degree in Arts and a diploma in Interior Decoration and Window Display. For the past 15 years she has worked with three international and national companies as a visual coordinator. She also has taught art to children at a Montessori school. "Nature has always inspired me, and to me the universe is like a huge canvas or palette filled with colors. My canvas and colors are my life. When I am working with paint it gives me a lot of positive energy and pleasure. I would like to thank my teacher Nancy, who makes our thoughts come out in colors instead of words."

You're invited to meet the artists on Sunday, August 21st, from 2pm to 4pm. Come see their work and learn more about their approach to

their art.

"The Evolution of Art" highlights the work of emerging local artists in a unique exhibit space. This innovative series brings together fine art and fresh-roasted coffee in an intimate and comfortable setting.

Beanetics is open Monday through Thursday from 7am to 8pm, Friday and Saturday from 7am to 9pm, and Sunday from 8:30am to 6pm.

On September 11, 2001, America experienced domestically the single worst terrorist attack any country has suffered in modern times with the collapse of over 250 building floors, the death of roughly 3,000 people, and the economic impact in the tens of billions of dollars. Ten years later, the nation has undergone tremendous changes in terms of how we do business on homeland security. Thanks to the PATRIOT Act and similar counterterrorism tools, at least 41 publicly known terrorist attacks have been foiled since 9/11 that otherwise would have resulted in a significant loss of life and property. Despite these successes however, many issues remain to be addressed if the nation hopes to stay ahead in the war on terrorism and build a healthy homeland security enterprise capable of tacking the threats we face.
Join us as we outline these issues and the future of the United States homeland security enterprise with the launch of The Heritage Foundations report Homeland Security 4.0: A New Agenda for Overcoming Centralization, Complacency, and Politics to Enhance Americas Security.
