DON'Trun the machine until you have made clear to your supervisor that you understand thepotential hazard of spindle rotation, the throwing of coolant and the throwing of swarf from the cutting process. DON'T run the machine until you have read and understood all manuals provided with the machine. DON'Trun the machine until you have read and understood all the machine and control keys. DON'T run the machine for the first time without a qualified instructor. Ask your supervisor for help when you need it. PROTECT your eyes. Wear safety glasses with side shields at all times. DON'T get caught in moving parts. Remove watches, rings, jewellery, neckties and loose fitting clothes. PROTECT your head. Wear a safety helmet when working near overhead hazards. KEEP your hair away from moving paris. PROTECT your feet. Always wear safety shoes with steel toes and oil resistant soles. Gloves are easily caught in moving parts. TAKE THEM OFF before you tum on the machine. Loose objects can become fiying projectiles. REMOVE all loose items (wrenches, chuck keys.tags etc.) from the machine before starting. NEVER operate a machine tool after taking strong medication, using non-prescription drugs,prescription drugs or consume alcohol which may impair concentration, ALWAYS make sure the working and cutting zone is safeguarded. PROTECT your hands. Make sure the spindle is stopped before manually changing a tool, PROTECT your hands. Beware sharp edges of cutting fools when changing and handling tools. PROTECT your eyes and the machine, Never use a compressed air hose to remove swarf or to clean out air vents. KEEP the work area well lighted, Ask for additional lighting if needed. DON'T slip. Keep your work area clean and dry, Remove swarf, oll and obstacles. NEVER lean on the machine, Stand away when machine is running. DON'T get trapped. Avoid pinch points caused between other machines and the machine you are working. PREVENT objects from flying loose. Securely clamp and locate the work piece. Use fixtures where possible. Use stop blocks where necessary. Keep clamps clear of the cutter path, PREVENT cutter breakage. Use correct cutter speed and axis feed rate for the job. Makemanual over ride adjustments of axis feed rate or spindle speed if you Notice unusual noise or vibration. Ask your supervisor for help if you need It. PREVENT cutter breakage. Rotate the spindle in a clockwise direction for right handed tools,counter clockwise for left handed tools. Use the correct tool for the Job. PREVENT work piece and cutter damage. Never start the machine when the cutter is in contact with the work piece. Dull and damaged tools break easily. Inspect tools and tool holders. Keep tools sharp. Keep overhang short. KEEP alll lubrication reservoirs maintained at the correct level. Always keep to the maintenance schedule. Certain materials such as magnesium, are highly flammable in-dust and chip form, See your supervisor before working these materials, 37. PREVENT fire. Keep flammable liquids and materials away from the work area and from hot swarf, 38. PREVENT the machine from moving unexpectedly. When leaving the machine unattended,not producing, leave switched in the MANUAL mode. 39, DON'Tuse the machine in a volatile atmosphere. Electrical devices fitted to the machine are for normal factory use and are not explosion proof. 40. ALWAYS keep the machine clean and do not let swarf collect. 41. ALWAYS keep the area around the machine clean and tidy. Opening the guards creates the potential for residual coolant and swarf to fall to the swarf tray and possibly fo the floor. Good housekeeping minimises the potential for trips, slip or fall of all personnel, 42. This machine tool is a milling machine, and is intended for the use in machining materials with the work piece fixed to the table, and the cutting tool rotating in the spindle. The machine should not be used for any other purpose. 43, ENSURE you understand the HOLD to RUN switch, when using the Z axis feed handle. 44, INFORM all other personnel who approach the machine about the hazards described in this safety list. 45, When making adjustments with spanners, always ensure that the required leverage is safely applied. Always avoid slippage. Always apply the leverage by pulling, never by pushing. Always use the correct size spanner. Ensure the spanner is not damaged. 46. Do not use organic chemical solvents to clean the machine guards or compressed Gir services equipment. 47. This machine is intended for use in an industrial environment and must not be used in the residential, commercial and light industrial environment. Ensure bolt is fully secured before lifting. It is advisable to swivel head before lifting machine. METHOD 2 Use rope sling as illustrated. Insert pads of soft cloth between rope and machined edges. It is advisable to tilt the head before lifting machine. Handling 11 Installation Remove rust preventative before moving any slideways. The coating is best removed by using paraffin applied with a clean brush, When the coating has softened, remove with clean rags. Oil or grease all lubrication points. Refer to the lubrication section of this manual (pages 3-1 onwards) Check all equipment against the delivery note. The Bridgeport however should be placed on a solid level floor or anti- vibration pads to prevent any rocking movement. POWER SUPPLY Check the panel voltage against the main supply. Connect the supply to the isolator Giagram). Check for correct spindle rotation. (In the HIGH SPEED range the spindle should rotate clockwise when viewed from the top of the machine) MACHINES SUPPLIED WITHOUT CONTROL PANEL, CERT OR DASE AM) a) Check motor voltages against supply. b) Ensure that the supply is connected to comply with the local safety regulations. Note the ‘J" Head switch has NO overload protection, when a Bridgeport control panel is not fitted. 1.4 Foundation - Power Supply Installation If the machine was delivered in a crate, the slideway handles will have been reversed, These should be fitted as illustrated on pages 4-1/4-2 To prepare your Bridgepor if delivery is made with the milling head in an upside down position: a) Lower knee approximately 150 mm (6”). b) Withdraw the safety pin on the left hand side of ram adaptor (illustrated on page 2-3) ¢) _ Slacken the four unit head mounting bolts. 4) Support unit head manually and use a spanner on swivel bolt (fig. b) to wind into upright position. ©) Press the safety pin back into the ram adaptor after passing the 25° mark. £) Tighten the four unit head mounting bolts. For continuous operation in the horizontal plane the head lubrication system must be modified (drawing supplied on request), To set a milling head square to the table, two methods are available: G) Using a large 90° set square mounted on the table, align faces with square. Gi) An indicator mounted in the spindle nose travelling in a 115 mm (4%4") radius. MOVE RAM SLIDE Use Bridgeport spanner and unlock the two bolts Turn the handle to move the slide to the desired position. Lock, tightening the rear bolt first. As an extra safety feature, the milling head and table feed motors are interlocked so that in the event of the spindle stalling, the feed will automatically stop. Swivel to required angular setting. Tighten 4 locking nuts. NOTE: For continuous operation in the Locking Nuts horizontal plane, the head lubrication system must be modified (drawing supplied on request). SWIVEL BELT HOUSING Slacken locking mut ‘A’. ‘Swivel to required setting. Tighten locking nut; before finally securing, ran’ spindle to give correct spline alignment. M-—Head Controls 2.6 Operation SPINDLE SPEEDS The % h.p. motor provides a range of spindle speeds from 330-5100 r.p.m. CHANGE SPEED Slacken the 2 locking nuts ‘A’. Slide motor forward. Remove belt guards, Position belt on appropriate pulleys. Slide motor to the rear of tension vee belt vi, Tighten the two locking nuts vii, Refit belt guards. IMPORTANT to conform to Health & Safety at Work Act. 6 QUILL FEED a) Sensitive Hand Feed i, Place handle on to boss. fi, Select most suitable position. Push home until locating pin engages. Fine Hand Feed i. Turn the fine feed clutch ‘A’ clockwise to engage the clutch. ii, The quill is now under handwheel control. M-Head Controls \ Locating Pin Operation 1. TO CHANGE SPEED Isolate machine, Slacken the 2 motor locking nuts. Slide motor forward. Position vee belt on appropriate pulleys. Slide motor to rear to tension vee belt. Tighten the 2 motor locking nuts. 2 OFF With 50 cycle 1425 rpm. Locking Nuts 60, 85, 120, 170, 245, 350, strokes per minute. TO CHANGE STROKE Slacken lock nut, Tur stroke dial to required setting. Lower quill to full extension, Remove 6 screws ‘A’ Remove belt housing ‘B', tap to withdraw from dowels. ‘The belts may now be changed Refit belt guards. Rotate housing ‘E” anti- clockwise from head casting. Remove spring from housing and replace. Refit spring to main housing 1 Turns casting turning housing clockwise until spring locates on peg in pinion shaft. FEED TRIP ADJUSTMENT Release locknut ‘A’: Engage trip handle Adjust micro nuts against quill stop “B’. Slowly turn adjusting screw “D’ until lever ‘C’ trips. At this point secure locknut ‘A’ Check that smart trip action is obtained J and 2J2 -Head 45 Maintenance COLLET ALIGNING SCREW REPLACEMENT — FS Use felt pen, mark reference line on quill and’nose cap ‘B’: Sn i Remove set screw ‘A’. SSS lf Unscrew nose cap ‘B" Remove lock screw ‘C’ and collet aligning screw ‘D’. Replace ‘D’; insert R.8 collet and check that the dog on the end of the screw does not foul on the bottom of the guide slot. Replace lock screw ‘C’ Replace nose cap ‘B’; check felt pen markings for correct alignment. Replace set screw ‘A’. Caution do not overtighten as this will cause distortion, Check gap ‘E’. (.003” =.08mm) 4.6 J and 2J 2—Head Maintenance QUILL REMOVAL Isolate machine. Remove belt guards. Remove motor. Remove drawhar. Fully extend quill. Remove 3 nuts ‘A’. Remove top section complete. Remove 1 screw ‘B* from top of quill. Remove clock spring housing 'C’- see instruction on replacing spring page 4-5. 10. Refit belt guards. IMPORTANT to conform to Health & Safety at Work Act.” J and 2J2-Head 47 Maintenance Remove screw ‘D' and ball reverse lever ‘E’. 'G" and arm ‘ Thread shaft ‘J’ through micro nuts and remove. Remove screw ‘K’ and stop *L’ Remove quill. Clean all areas, oil berally and reassemble. Check correct operation of feed trip linkage. See instruction on page 4-5 Reassembly of spiine alignment. sce page 2-2. 4.7 J and 2J2 —Head Maintenance MOTOR REMOVAL Run head to adjust to lowest speed. Isolate machine, Remove 3 screws ‘A’ & cover ‘B’. Using the two screws ‘A’, compress spring ‘C’. Rotate the speed changer to the highest speed. Remove the reversing switch from the belt housing. Remove the two locking nuts ‘D’, Lift the motor and rest the case on stud ‘E’, Ease the belt over the lower drive dise and remove the motor. 2JU2 —Head 4.8 Maintenance DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT Remove the motor as described on page 48 Remove the three screws ‘A's insert into the adjacent tapped holes and withdraw bearing housing ‘B'. Remove the two screws and the bushes 'C’ Remove four-screws ‘D' and one screw ‘E’. Remove four screws securing the speed changer ‘F Remove top housing ‘G’; tap to clear the dowels. Replace the belt. TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT, Remove the motor. Lower the quill to full extent, Remove the two lower cap screws ‘A’ from the speed changer housing. Remove the four cap screws ‘B" Remove the top assembly ‘C’ and tap to clear dowels. Replace the belt. 4.9 2J2 -Head Maintenance BRAKE SHOE REPLACEMENT Remove the top section. Remove the two screws Remove the clutch hub assembly ‘B" Replace the brake shoes ‘C” Remove the bearing, drive dises and circlips from the hub assembly ‘B’. Replace the bearing and housing ‘D’. Thread the hub ‘B’ through the bearing and reassemble the discs ete 2J2 -—Head 4.10 Maintenance VEE BELT REPLACEMENT. Isolate machine. Slacken belt tension by unlocking nuts ‘A’. Remove guards. Remove the vee belt downwards from the rear pulley lifting the motor off if necessary. Remove vee belt from pulley by lifting upwards and passing the belt through the recess at the top of the belt housing Pass the new vee belt through the opening at the top of the belt housing, over the drawbar and pulley, feeding the belt onto the motor pulley. Refit belt guards. IMPORTANT to conform to Health & Safety at Work Act. 411 M—Head Maintenance QUILL REMOVAL Isolate machine. Remove belt guards Unlock hex nuts ‘A’ and remove motor. Remove drawbar. Slacken 4” hex headed screw 'B’ Remove belt housing unit °C’ from quill housing ‘D’ by lifting upwards. Refit belt guards IMPORTANT to conform to Health & Safety at Work Act. Turn micronut ‘E’ to the top of the microscrew. Slacken hollow set screw in bottom of projection. Using a large screw driver engage in bottom of microscrew (RH. thread) and remove screw downwards. M-Head 4.12 Maintenance QUILL REMOVAL CONT. 9. Remove #4” allen cap screw 'G’ from microstop. 10. Push quill upwards to limit of travel and remove skirt ‘H’. Remove quill feed clutch knob ‘J and bolt ‘K’: Remove 3 screws ‘L’ and spring cover ‘M’. . Remove outer end of spring ‘N’ with thin pliers. The quill is now free to be drawn out from the nose cap end. 4.12M—Head Maintenance REMOVING MOTOR 1. Slacken the two hex nuts either side of belt housing. 2. Remove motor. CHANGING SPEED To change speed slacken the two hex nuts ‘A’ and move motor forward. Open the belt housing cover ‘B’, and change speed by moving pulley ‘C’ then re-tension. REMOVING REDUCTION DRIVE UNIT OR RAM Slacken hex nuts ‘A’ and remove motor. Remove vee belt pulley ‘C’. Remove two screws 'D’ from air vent cover ‘E’ and bring into view the top end of the connecting rod. Remove two flat headed screws ‘F’ and bearing retaining washer ‘G’ Remove three socket screws ‘H’ and split the geathousing from the ram housing The reduction drive unit may now be removed complete whilst the ram may bbe drawn out downwards from the clapperbox end. E-Head 4.13 Maintenance CHANGING THE GEARCASE OIL, Drain and refill gearcase with % pint of scony 600W cylinder oil or equivalent after first two months of normal service and twice yearly thereafter. Oil should flow when both plugs are removed and attachment inverted in the vertical axis, be sure to replace plugs in proper holes. Top plug is drilled for vent. This mut must be tight while attachment is in operation. Plug with Vent Hole ‘B’ (Remove screw sealing vent hole before operating).
