Section 1 Introduction
The Serial Number Format Instruction is intended both for internal Tesla use and for
suppliers who directly supply parts and/or materials to Tesla. It serves to work in
conjunction with relevant industry standards and to provide clarification of Tesla’s
requirements and expectations.

Tesla requires compliance to the standard for serialized parts tracked by Tesla. All Tesla
specific parts must follow this standard. Any deviation from this specification must be
approved in advance by Tesla.

To all business partners, your feedback is extremely valued and we encourage you to
share your input on all areas covered in this and any other documents, or in any other
aspect of our business. Site visits to Tesla are also encouraged and you should at all times
feel free to provide feedback, whether minor or major.

Section 2 Document Purpose & Structure

This specification defines the serial number format of Tesla, Inc. which applies to Serial
and Batch Number identification. By adhering to this standardized specification, it ensures
that maximum traceability, genealogy, inventory tracking, and containment is possible by
Tesla’s systems.

For part label specifications, please refer to BMS-0000007 - Part Labeling Specification.

For shipping label specifications, please refer to BMS-0000003 - Shipping Label

Specification.

Section 3 Serial and Batch Number

3.1 Serial and Batch Number Format
The serial number shall be comprised of three fields, as shown in Figure 1. Each field shall
be restricted to the alpha-numeric characters, digits 0-9, and capital letters A-Z, except as
noted in the field descriptions.

3.1.1 Build Site Code

Build side code, shown as SSS in Figure 1, shall be a unique 3 character code assigned by
Tesla to each part manufacturing site producing parts for Tesla. Build site codes beginning
with ‘T’ (T_ _) are reserved for Tesla manufacturing sites. In the case of suppliers using
multiple sites, each site shall require a unique Build Site Code. Build Site Codes shall be
communicated to each supplier after acceptance of a business agreement and prior to
the start of production.

3.1.2 Build Date Code

The build date section, shown as YYJJJ in Figure 1, shall be comprised of five (5) digits,
further broken into Year and Julian date fields, and shall correspond to the start of the
production run.

3.1.2.1 Year Code

The first two digits, shown as YY in Figure 1, shall correspond to the last two digits of the year in which
the start of production commenced, for example, the year 2020 shall be represented as “20”.

3.1.2.2 Day Code

Digits 3 through 5 of the Build Date Code, shown as JJJ in Figure 1, shall correspond to the day of the
year according to the Julian calendar. Refer to for Julian calendar tables section.

3.1.2.3 Build Date Code Example

The date March 16, 2020, falls in a leap year and is represented as “20076”.

3.1.3 Unique ID Code

The Unique ID code, shown as cccccc in Figure 1, shall be comprised of 6 alphanumeric
characters, digits 0-9, and capital letters A-Z. Format is not dictated by Tesla and supplier
may use these digits in any way on condition that uniqueness criteria is met for a given
Site and Build Date code combination. Sequential incrementing is not required and
suppliers may choose to apply some internal intelligence, however UID codes shall be
subject to the restrictions defined for serial numbers (Section 4) and batch numbers
(Section 5).

3.1.4 Supplier Serial Number Example

To illustrate how the serial number can be generated for a supplier component or
material, the following example application is provided:
 A Tesla Build Site Code “X1Z”
 which commenced the production of a batch or component on March 16, 2020 (a leap
year thus Julian date 076)
 and a supplier-assigned Unique ID with the following logic:
o Production shift of “1”
o Production processing line “A”
o Tooling set used “7”
o and sequential alphanumeric output “1R5”
The resulting Serial Number would be “X1Z200761A71R5”.

A second example may use more simple logic:

 A Tesla Build Site Code “X1Z”

 which commenced the production of a batch or component on March 16, 2019 (a
non-leap year thus Julian date 075)
 and a supplier-assigned Unique ID with the following logic:
o Product identifier “C”
o Production sequence number “00001”
The resulting Serial Number would be “X1Z19075C00001”.

Section 4 Serial Numbers

The serial number is labeled on each part and must be created by the part manufacturer
such that it is unique. Uniqueness in the serial number shall include all product at a
supplier site on a production date regardless of part number, resulting in no two parts
shipped to Tesla having the same serial number. This unique status must be ensured over
the document retention period. To determine if a particular item requires a serial
number, refer to Tesla specifications for the component and BMS-0000151 - Traceability
Specifications.

Product only for Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X vehicle production lines shall be
updated to this standard when cost is not impacted, or shall have deviations requested
when cost may be impacted.

Section 5 Batch Number

The batch number of batched parts from a common manufacturing run is labeled on each
part and/or package as defined in the Tesla Specification BMS-0000007 - Part Labeling
Specification. Uniqueness in the batch number shall include all product at a supplier site
on a production date regardless of part number, resulting in no two different batches of
parts shipped to Tesla having the same batch number. This unique status must be ensured
over the document retention period. To determine batch numbering and labeling
requirements, refer to Tesla specifications for the component and BMS-0000151 -
Traceability Specifications.

Product only for Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X vehicle production lines shall be
