What is a Consumer Society?

A consumer is a person who buys things, and a consumer society is a society that
encourages people to buy and use goods1.Some people think that a consumer society
provides people with better lives. People in consumer societies tend to
live more comfortably. They eat a wider variety of food. They go to restaurants more
often. They also buy a lot of products, maybe more than they need.
Products such as TVs, cell phones, and computers used to be luxuries 2. Today people
can buy these things more easily than ever before. The market for these goods is
growing faster all the time. Consumer societies encourage people to
buy bigger and better products. For example, “smarter” phones come out every year.
In a consumer society, people are often buying newer and more advanced products.
This creates a lot of waste. Nowadays, many people are thinking more seriously about
the effects of consumer societies on the environment, and they are trying to
become more responsible consumers.

Making a brief consultation of the meaning of consumerism, according to its textbook

definition, it is the human desire to possess and obtain products and goods that exceed
basic needs. Basic needs generally refer to having enough food, clothes and coat, that
nothing of the basics is missing in our house, wardrobe.

Among other definitions of consumerism, it is about and implies that buyers know their
rights in seeking protection from being treated unfairly or taken advantage of by traders.

However, many references to consumerism refer to people who buy material goods.

Among all this the only real benefit of consumerism is to improve the economy, in a
text said Dr. Seshan Ramaswami,Associate Professor of Marketing Education at
Singapore Management University (SMU).

When a larger proportion of citizens buy goods and services beyond their needs,
consume more, spend more, and that can create a cycle of demand that leads to more
production and greater employment, which leads to even greater consumption,
sometimes there are things that people do not need but nevertheless buy, either because
it is a novelty or because others around them have this luxury, despite that it may not be
entirely necessary.

Based on what has already been discussed, consumerism creates a boom in the
consumer goods and services industries, and for retailers. that serve these industries,
experienced doctors in the field consider that the increase in consumerism can lead to
the innovation and creativity of the market as well. Leading Ph.D. who is also director
of research and development at the NTU Asian Consumer Perspective Institute:
mentions the following "The so-called free market economy has supposedly put the
consumer in the driver's seat when it comes to market forces."

For years now as corporations practiced green marketing within their products and
services, they were promoting the green initiative, an initiative that impacts both
corporations and communities.

This reinforces the efforts of other companies to operate with green responsibility and
inspires consumers to remain vigilant so that companies are held accountable for their
actions.

Customers are becoming better informed and more aware of the environmental impact
of consumer products. Thus, they demand that the industry improve the environment
performance of your products. Today, customers are more enlightened and informed,
and they are also concerned about their children when it comes to being ecological, an
important reason since the fact of bringing so many products to the planet has left it
damaged and hurt, we must put a red light and raise awareness towards the planet and
the products we use and that can be harmful, there will always be ways to avoid or
minimize damage, but we must first look at ways to address this situation regarding
each product we consume.

I believe that we start by raising awareness and researching more about the materials we
consume daily, evaluating if we are resorting to the best alternative for the planet,
carrying out recycling projects from home helps a lot, and also observing products that
we see as luxury, such as a cell phone, a necklace of a certain material and to make way
for this product in the most sustainable way possible, we are helping ourselves, the
planet and our future generations that are going to inhabit the planet, it is necessary to
raise awareness so that the consumption that we have not be seen from a negative point
of view, but see how to transmute so that it is not harmful to our life and future on the
planet, today there are many alternatives and organic and recycling options, we must
look there.
