TASK
It is a common observation that industrialized countries generate huge amounts of
food waste every day and many commentators argue that this state of affairs is
both impractical and immoral. Write an opinion article to a local newspaper in
which you attempt to raise awareness regarding this issue, First, describe ways in
which food is commonly wasted (L2). Then, offer opinions and suggestions as to
how we could help to alleviate the problem
od waste (L3)

Food waste issue is one of the top topics that industrialized countries and
new generation must deal with in the years to come, if we want to preserve
our planet and fight hunger in the developed nations. Let us explore some of
the facts that generate this world problem and the ways to find a possible
solution.
Industrialized countries generate huge amounts of food every day, more |,
than we need te réach our daily needs. Precisely, the Food industry inthe —- |
United States generates three times the daily nutritional needs of a human.
Sadly, almost thirty percent of this food end up being through out. There are
many reasons to explain that, one of them occurs even before it enters the
supermarkets, because of the food standards, an apple, for example, must
have the right colour and size to be sold in the market, if not, itis discarded
ending up directly $6 the landfill. On the other hand, farmers of industrialized |
countries sometimes are unable to harvest their crops or killing it because
the fluctuation in the market prices, that makes the cost of labor to harvest
higher than the value of selling it, and end up rotting. ~~
Several actions can be made to prevent food wasted in developed countries.
First, food business should offer a second market to the not standard fruit
with lower prices and substantial discounts making them more attractive to
the public. Second, we must incentive the nearby market, that reduce the
taxes of the distributors, and lowers the prices | s products just fom the
_ farmers to the buyers. And finally, all the food that inevitably just end up in
the land fills can be composted, generating new recycled ways of energy
using the methane that it generates or turning it in to a valuable soil.
in conclusion, wasted food is a growing problem in our society, but also an
untapped opportunity in the within years to come. The possible solutions to
face it will probably change other issues like greenhouse effect or hunger in
developing countries. Lid
