Introduction
• International tourist arrivals were down 83% in the first
quarter of 2021 as widespread travel restrictions remained in
place.
• Between January and March 2021 destinations around the
world welcomed 180 million fewer international arrivals
compared to the first quarter of last year.
The Impact of COVID on Tourism Cuts
Global Exports by 4%
• The UNWTO World Tourism Barometer also shows the
economic toll of the pandemic. International tourism
receipts in 2020 declined by 64% in real terms (local
currencies, constant prices), equivalent to a drop of over US$
900 billion, cutting the overall worldwide exports value by
over 4% in 2020. The total loss in export revenues from
international tourism (including passenger transport)
amounts to nearly US$ 1.1 trillion. Asia and the Pacific (-70%
in real terms) and the Middle East (-69%) saw the largest
drops in receipts.
Outlook for 2021
• Based on current trends, UNWTO expects international
tourist arrivals to be down about 85% in the first quarter of
2021 over the same period of 2019. This would represent a
loss of some 260 million international arrivals when
compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Outlook for 2021
• Looking ahead, UNWTO has outlined two scenarios for 2021,
which consider a possible rebound in international travel in
the second half of the year. These are based on a number of
factors, most notably a major lifting of travel restrictions, the
success of vaccination programmes or the introduction of
harmonized protocols such as the Digital Green Certificate
planned by the European Commission.
Outlook for 2021
• The first scenario points to a rebound in July, which would
result in a 66% increase in international arrivals for the year
2021 compared to the historic lows of 2020. In this case,
arrivals would still be 55% below the levels recorded in 2019.
• The second scenario considers a potential rebound in
September, leading to a 22% increase in arrivals compared to
last year. Still, this would be 67% below the levels of 2019.
How The Travel Industry Will
Perform After Pandemic In 2021:
Travel Trends Of 2021
The Growth of Domestic Tourism
• With the travel and airline restrictions, lockdowns and bans
are being implemented resulting in constant opening and
closing of travel which makes the tourist not feel comfortable
in travelling internationally yet. Which is why the year 2021,
will see the increase of domestic tourism, while foreign
tourist are likely to remain less for a few months. One of the
main reasons for the future boom in the domestic sector is
that travelers in 2021 prefer to explore their own country
and go on short weekend trips.
The Growth of Domestic Tourism
• This will increase the visibility of remote destinations and
help the locals of the destinations in getting their livelihood
back. This will in return boost the local economy, create
more jobs, and help the hotels and restaurants of the region,
promote local art handicrafts and culture.
• The Domestic vacation are now top of the travelers bucket
list for 2021, as just the first week of January 2021 saw 70%
of users booking for future domestic trips on Tripadvisor.
Travellers Will Choose Closer-to-home
Destinations
• Domestic substitution will continue in 2021 as some
international travel restrictions will remain in place for at
least part of the year. It will take time for traveller sentiment
to recover and short-haul markets will be favoured due to
safety perception, affordability and possible shifts in
preferences for more sustainable destinations and travel
modes. Modal shift from air to drive travel will remain a
feature in 2021.
Workation Trips to Increase
• The work plus vacation or business plus travel is said to be
rising in 2021 because many companies are opting to mix
business with travelling when it comes to conferences and
meetings. Which is why they have come up with brilliant
travel plans that will help employees work along with leisure.
They are also given options to bring along their family
members. The concept of business travel is getting popular
as people have started to realize that all people need is
electricity and a good internet connection to work.
Road Trips are the New Trend
• With many restrictions and travel bans people have started
opting for short road trips. Many tourists still don't trust
public transport like buses, trains or even airlines. Instead,
they plan to go on road trips in their own vehicles or even
rent cars as it is a safer option.
• Road trips are also popular among tourist of all age groups
and families as it promotes social distancing. Plus, there is an
added advantage of reducing the travel expenses and vast
option of destination to choose from.
