What is the meaning of the conquest of
space?
Definition: In terms of this development,
the attempt to conquer space means
that man hopes he will be able to
journey to the Archimedean point which
he anticipated by sheer force of
abstraction and imagination.
First human in space:
e Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (9 March
1934 — 27 March 1968) was a Soviet
pilot and cosmonaut who became
the first human to journey into outer
space. Travelling in the Vostok 1
capsule, Gagarin completed one
orbit of Earth on 12 April 1961.First animals into the space:
e The first animal to make an orbital
spaceflight around the Earth was the
dog Laika, aboard the Soviet
spacecraft Sputnik 2 on 3 November
1957.
e Inthe 1940s and 1950s, the Soviet
Union and US space programmes
sent numerous species of animals
into space, including monkeys, mice
and dogs. However, these were
suborbital flights, which meant the
spacecraft passed into outer space
before falling back to Earth without
making an orbit.
e Two dogs, Belka and Strelka, were
launched into space on August 19,
1960 aboard the Soviet's Sputnik 5spacecraft. They returned to Earth
one day later, becoming the first
living creatures to be launched into
space and returned safely to the
ground.
