When man disobey the commandment of God which is not to touch or eat the fruit
of “tree of knowledge and evil”, God gave them consequences. The entire human
race will deprive to the sanctifying grace. In these actions, God shows to man and
woman that He is a Just God. But God did not let His sons/daughters to suffer and
He promised a savior.

God manifest to human race that He is also a Merciful God. Jesus of Nazareth was
the promised savior of God, who will redeem and save the humankind in suffering.
He is the Christ, the Messiah, and the “Anointed one” proclaimed by the prophets in
the Old Testament. His name tells about His purpose in this world. The second article
of faith tells about Jesus, the second Divine person.

The module provides the accounts of Jesus as Christ, Son of God and our Lord. It
also shows the Divinity of Jesus and the other titles that give to Jesus.

The name Jesus

Jesus is a short name for Jehoshua, or Joshua means in Hebrew: "God saves." At the annunciation, the angel
Gabriel gave him the name Jesus as his proper name, which expresses both his identity and his mission. (“behold,
you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus” Lk 1:31) Since God alone can
forgive sins, it is God who, in Jesus his eternal Son made man, "will save his people from their sins” (Mt 1:21) in
Jesus, God recapitulates all of his history of salvation on behalf of men. Jesus does what his name implies. He is
the Savior, he brings salvation.

The name of Jesus is at the heart of Christians prayer. All liturgical prayers conclude with the words “through our
Lord Jesus Christ”. The Hail Mary reaches its high point in the words ‘blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus’.
The Eastern prayer of the heart, the Jesus Prayer, says: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a
sinner’. Many Christians, such as Saint Joan of Arc, have died with the one word ‘Jesus’ on their lips. (CCC 435)

The name "Jesus" signifies that the very name of God is present in the person of his Son, made man for the
universal and definitive redemption from sins. It is the divine name that alone brings salvation, and henceforth all
can invoke his name, for Jesus united himself to all men through his Incarnation, (Jn 3:18; Acts 2:21; 5:41; 3 Jn 7;
Rom 10:6-13) so that "there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts
4:12; cf. 9:14; Jas 2:7).

Jesus' Resurrection glorifies the name of the Saviour God, for from that time on it is the name of Jesus that fully
manifests the supreme power of the "name which is above every name" (Phil 2:9-10; cf. Jn 12:28). The evil spirits
fear his name; in his name his disciples perform miracles, for the Father grants all they ask in this name (Phil 2:9-
10; cf. Jn 12:28).

Jesus, the Christ

The Jewish people have a long history with God. But they also share a long history with other nations. They come
to understand that, they are unfaithful, God lets them go their mighty neighbors. In the end the country of the Jews
is conquered and occupied by the Romans. Many give up hope

As Christians, we believe and proclaim that Jesus is the Christ, the promised Messiah. God has sent him and
anointed him with his spirit (Is 61:1, Lk 4:18). He is the Savior whom God has promised to his people and to all
nation. He will redeem his people from their sins (Mt 1:21)
The word "Christ" comes from the Greek translation of the Hebrew Messiah, which means "anointed". It became
the name proper to Jesus only because he accomplished perfectly the divine mission that "Christ" signifies. In
effect, in Israel those consecrated to God for a mission that he gave were anointed in his name. This was the case
for kings, for priests and, in rare instances, for prophets (Cf. Ex 29:7; Lev 8:12; 1 Sam 9:16; 10:1; 16:1, 12-13; I
Kings 1:39;
19:16). This had to be the case all the more so for the Messiah whom God would send to inaugurate his kingdom
definitively (Cf. Ps 2:2; Acts 4:26-27). It was necessary that the Messiah be anointed by the Spirit of the Lord at
once as king and priest, and also as prophet (Cf. Is 11:2; 61:1; Zech 4:14; 6:13; Lk 4:16-21). Jesus fulfilled the
messianic hope of Israel in his threefold office of priest, prophet and king.

In the Old Testament, “son of God” is a title given to the angels, the Chosen people, the children of Israel, and
their kings. It signifies an adoptive sonship that establishes a relationship of particular intimacy between God and
his creature. When the promised Messiah-King is called “son of God,” it does not necessarily imply that he was
more than human, according to the literal meaning of these texts. Those who called Jesus "son of God", as the
Messiah of Israel, perhaps meant nothing more than this. (Cf. I Chr 17:13; Ps 2:7; Mt 27:54; Lk 23:47)

Jesus Christ, the messiah, Speak of God as no other person does – directly and intimately. In all he says or does
he is one with the Father. He knows the will of God. That is why he can contradict the scribes, or doctors of the
law (the learned men of Jerusalem) who claim the authority of God while seeking to curb the freedom of the people
who have been entrusted to their care, and making life difficult for them.

Jesus brings people closer to God. He heals the sick, eats with the tax collectors, and does not avoid those who,
because of their infirmities, have been excluded from community and the religious ceremonies. To those who have
sinned he offers forgiveness, in God’s name, and gives them courage to change their lives.

When people in Israel wanted to describe someone as being especially close to God, they would say he is a “son
of God”. And, because he has specially chosen them, God calls the entire people of Israel “my first-born son” (Ex
4:22). And the Kings of Israel, who ruled the people as the people as the representatives of God, also heard these
words on the day of their coronation: “You are my son” (Ps 2:7). But when we say “Jesus is the Son of God”, we
mean much more than this. For Jesus is God himself, the Son of God. And in fact there is nothing in our human
world that can be compared to his relationship with the Father. The evangelists make this clear when they witness
that God himself declares Jesus to be his “Beloved Son” at two crucial moments in his earthly life. The first is
after his baptism in the River of Jordan, before Jesus begins his public life (Mk 1:9-11). The second is at his
Transfiguration on the mountain, before he sets out for Jerusalem, to suffer and die there (Mk 9:2-10)

Jesus, our Lord

The first people of God live in Covenant agreement with God. Their kings are reminded constantly by the prophets
that they must rule in God’s name. their priests offer sacrifice in God’s honor. His commandments are accepted
by all and are the one “Law” that is binding on all-on the powerful and on the lowly alike. In their prayers the
Jewish believers address themselves to their “Lord”. The name Yahweh means “I AM WHO AM” and is so holy
to them that they dare not to speak it or write it for fear of profaning it. They give thanks to God the Lord, who is
close to his people, kind and merciful, and who asks only that they love him “with all your heart, and with all your
soul, and with all your might” (Dt 6:5).
Christians use the title “Lord” to address not only God the Father but also Jesus Christ who rose from the dead. In
doing so they are acknowledging him as God, while proclaiming themselves to be his People and expressing all
their trust in him. They likewise express their desire to serve him and to serve one another as himself commanded
them to do on the night before he suffered:
You call me “Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher,
have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.

For the early Christians, to acknowledge Jesus as Lord could have fatal consequences. For the Roman
emperors also called themselves “lords of the world”. Many Christian men and women gave their lives as
martyrs for witnessing Christ as the One and Only Lord and refusing to deny him.

Very often in the Gospels people address Jesus as "Lord". This title testifies to the respect and trust of those
who approach him for help and healing (Cf Mt 8:2; 14:30; 15:22). At the prompting of the Holy Spirit,
"Lord" expresses the recognition of the divine mystery of Jesus (Lk 1:43; 2:11). In the encounter with the
risen Jesus, this title becomes adoration: "My Lord and my God!" It thus takes on a connotation of love and
affection that remains proper to the Christian tradition: "It is the Lord!"(Jn 20:28, 21:7). CCC 448

By attributing to Jesus the divine title "Lord", the first confessions of the Church's faith affirm from the
beginning that the power, honour and glory due to God the Father are due also to Jesus, because "he was in the
form of God",( Cf. Acts 2:34 - 36; Rom 9:5; Titus 2:13; Rev 5:13; Phil 2:6) and the Father manifested the
sovereignty of Jesus by raising him from the dead and exalting him into his glory (Cf. Rom 10:9; I Cor 12:3; Phil
2:9-11). CCC 449

Christian prayer is characterized by the title "Lord", whether in the invitation to prayer ("The Lord be with
you"), its conclusion ("through Christ our Lord") or the exclamation full of trust and hope: Maranatha ("Our
Lord, come!") or Maranatha ("Come, Lord!") - "Amen Come Lord Jesus!" (I Cor 16:22; Rev 22:20) CCC 451

Filipino Images of Christ

Three popular Filipino images of Christ are particularly expressive. First is the Santo Niño (the
Holy Child) imaging the innocence, simplicity, child-like wonder of Christ. While responding to the Filipino’s
natural love for children, the child image of Christ can sometimes foster a one-sided focus which neglects the
mature, adult Christ and the demands of responsible discipleship.

A second common image is Hesus Nazareno, picturing the suffering Jesus and inspiring many folk devotional
panata. This image of Jesus’ suffering love is very consoling to numberless Filipinos in dire poverty and
hardships. Yet, unless it is balanced by the image of the Risen Christ, the Victor over sin and death itself, it can
foster a certain self-centered, passive fatalistic attitude that impedes free, creative response to everyday
challenges.

A third popular image of Christ, common in jeepneys and tricycles, is the Sacred Heart, whose
meek and mild countenance invites like attitudes in his followers. Traditional Filipino courtesy and patience in the
face of suffering are thus religiously grounded. But this serene image needs to be related to Christ the Liberator,
inspired by his mission to “light a fire on the earth” (Lk 12:49). It is this image of Christ, liberating us both within
our personal lives and social structures, that has captured the special attention of many Filipinos today.

Every Sunday during the Eucharistic celebration, Filipino Catholics proclaim their faith in Jesus Christ, the only
Son, our Lord. The doctrine of the mission and identity of Jesus Christ is the core of every Christian Creed. To
affirm “Jesus is Lord” is the central conviction of the Christian community. On the truth of Christ as Son and
Savior depend all the basic Catholic doctrines: of God as Triune Creator, of the Church as Christ’s Mystical Body,
of redemption from sin by Christ’s Paschal Mystery, of our life of grace in the Holy Spirit, and of our final destiny
with God in eternal life.

The moral dimensions of Christ’s mission and identity are innumerable. Christ as Son and Savior becomes in
person the fundamental moral norm for Christian action. At his Transfiguration, the link between doctrinal truth
and moral action is explicitly made. The truth, “This is my beloved Son,” is followed immediately by the moral
command, “Listen to him!” (Mk 9:7). Christ as prophet and Savior not only left us with moral teachings, especially
in his great Sermon on the Mount (cf. Mt 5-7). More importantly, he inspired a unique moral vision of loving
service, and offered the interior power of his Holy Spirit to pursue that vision. “The way we can be sure of our
knowledge of Jesus is to keep his commandments. The man who claims, ‘I have known him,’ without keeping his
commandments, is a liar; in such a one there is no truth” (1 Jn 2:3-4).

The basic worship dimension of Christ’s mission and person is felt in two areas. There is first the place of Christ
in all Christian worship. The center of the Church’s liturgy is the Eucharistic Sacrifice of his Body and Blood, the
sacramental representation and application of Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross (cf. LG 28; SC 7,47; PCP II 77, 180).
Christ himself, as Son and Savior, is in Person the Primordial Sacrament of God’s presence among us. Second,
there is the yearning prayer to Christ himself, expressed in the ancient liturgical refrain: “Marana tha! O Lord
come!” (1 Cor 16:22; cf. Rv 22:20).
