ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE
2
OBJECTIVES
1. Identify the wavelength and frequency of different forms
of electromagnetic waves
2. Construct a poem on the importance of electromagnetic
wave in our modern society.
3. Appreciate practical applications of the different regions
of electromagnetic waves
LEARNING COMPETENCY
I. WHAT HAPPENED
3
PRE-ACTIVITIES/PRE-TEST
If you said yes to all questions above, then you should be thankful for
the electromagnetic wave around us. This is the reason why we can watch
television or hear music from our radio. This is also the reason behind sending
messages to your friends or love ones using your smart phones.
Read but don’t be stressed. Enjoy every learning that you will gain in
your life.

DISCUSSION
RADIO WAVES
Image 1: Radio
Uses:
Radio waves have the largest wavelength in the electromagnetic
spectrum. Radio waves are used in radio and television communication.
These waves are transmitted easily through air. They do not cause damage if
absorbed by human body, and they can be reflected to change their
direction. These properties make them ideal for communication.
MICROWAVES
Uses:
Microwaves can penetrate the atmosphere of the earth. This is the
reason why they used for satellite communication. Microwaves have short
wavelength and are reflected by small objects. This property is used in radar
(RAdio Detection And Ranging). They are also used to transmit television
news coverage from mobile broadcasting vehicle back to the station. In a
microwave oven, food absorbed certain microwave frequency very strongly.

INFRARED
Wavelength: 7 x 10-7 - 1 x 10 -3 meter
Frequency: 3 x 1011 - 4 x 1014 Hertz
Discovered by: Sir William Herschel
VISIBLE LIGHT
Wavelength: 4 x 10 -7 - 7 x 10-7 meter
Frequency: 4 x 10 14 - 7.5 x 1014 Hertz
Uses:
Visible light is the light we
can see. It is used in fiber optic
communication, where coded
pulses of light travel through glass Image 4: Rainbow
fibers from a source to receiver.

Table 1: Wavelength of Different Colors of Light
Wavelength
Color
(nanometer)
Violet-Indigo 390 to 455
Blue 455 to 492
Green 492 to 577
Yellow 577 to 597
Orange 597 to 622
Red 622 to 700
Wavelength: 1 x 10 -8 - 4 x 10 -7 meter
Frequency: 7.5 x 1014 - 3 x 1016 Hertz
Discovered by: Johann Wilhelm Ritter
Uses:’
The sun is our main source of ultraviolet radiation
but there is also artificial source of UV light. Ultraviolet Image 5: UV Lamp
lamps are used by bank to check signature on
passbook.
Ultraviolet radiation can kill bacteria that are present in water- this
sterilizes the water and make it safe to drink. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation id also
good for the skin as it helps to make Vitamin D. However, too much
exposure to UV can cause skin problems. Suntan or sunscreen lotion serve as
filters to protect the body from ultraviolet radiation.
X-RAYS
Wavelength: 1 x 10-11 - 4 x 10 -8 meter
Frequency: 7.5 x 1016 - 3 x 1019 Hertz
Discovered by: Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen
Short wavelength X-rays can penetrate even through metals. They are
used in industry to inspect welded joints for faults.
Too much exposure to X-rays can damage body tissue and can cause
cancer.
GAMMA RAYS
Uses:
Gamma rays are very strong that they can kill living cells. Gamma rays are
used to treat cancer through the process called radiotherapy. They are also
used for sanitation of drinking water.
