Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918 – October 14, 1990)


 Was an American conductor, composer, pianist,
music educator, author, and humanitarian.
Considered to be one of the most important
conductors of his time, he was the first
American conductor to receive international
acclaim. According to music critic Donal
Henahan, he was "one of the most prodigiously
talented and successful musicians in American
history". Bernstein was the recipient of many
honors, including seven Emmy Awards, two Tony
Awards, sixteen Grammy Awards including the
Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Kennedy
Center Honor.

Setting
 West Side Story takes place on the west side of
Manhattan, New York City. Most of the scenes
take place in the streets, playground, on the
root, at Doc’s or under the highway.

Music composition style


 West Side Story is a classical music, but it isn’t
opera by any means.

Role of the composer and lyricist


 Leonard Bernstein was an American composer
and conductor lived from 1918 to 1990 and who
wrote in many styles, and forms, including
musicals, operas, ballets, symphonic, and
orchestral works. The story is loosely based on
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, telling the tale
of star-crossed lovers from rival factions.

Role of the audience


 It’s for the masses like me, and it shows the
hardships of the American dream.
