ASSIGNMENT NO 1

DEFINATION
The use of computer to create and manipulate
meaningful information in the form of images.

TYPES
Computer graphics can be separated into two
different categories
1. Raster graphics
2. Vector graphics

1. RASTER GRAPHICS
Raster graphics, also called bitmap graphics, are
digital images that are composed of tiny
rectangular pixels, or picture elements, that are
arranged in a grid or raster of x and y coordinates
(includes a z coordinate in case of 3D) in such a
way that it forms an image. It is also referred to as
bitmap since it has information that is mapped
directly to the display’s grid.
The file size of a raster image depends also on the
size of the image, which is determined by the
number of pixels being used in the image. This
means that an image with a 1280x720 resolution
will contain 921,600 pixels while a full HD
1920x1080 image will have 2,073,600 pixels,

which will obviously give it a bigger file size when

compared to the former.

2. VECTOR GRAPHICS
Whereas raster graphics depend on pixels, vector
graphics use paths made from a mathematical
formula. This formula, also known as vectors, tells
the path its shape, colour and if there is one, its
border.
The most noticeable difference between vector
graphics when compared to raster is its lack of
detail. As vectors are comprised of shapes, with
each shape having its own colour, they cannot work
with gradients, shadows or any complex detail.
Because of this, vector images are best used for
simple designs that have solid colours.
On the plus side, since vectors are mathematical,
they can be scaled infinitely without sacrificing
quality. This is because as a vector image is scaled
up, the mathematical equation recalculates,
presenting the image as a crisp clear shot, but
bigger. Because of this, vector images are great for
things such as logos, simple product artwork and
illustrations, but not for detailed painting or photo
editing.

Which should you use?

Whether you use raster or vector graphics depends
mainly on what you want your image to achieve. If
you plan on creating or editing a complex painting
digitally, you’re not going to want to use vector
graphics since it will entirely limit the amount of
detail in your image. Similarly, if you only plan on
creating a simple image, perhaps as a logo or as a
chart, vector graphics are much more versatile and
create a clearer image. Sometimes, you might not
even have a choice. Photographs will always open
in a raster file type, meaning you’ll be working on
those in raster software. This isn’t necessarily a bad
thing either, as you’ll likely be wanting to make
detailed edits to a complex photo.
It’s worth noting that many projects actually
combine raster and vector images. For example, a
booklet or brochure might feature a logo or graph
created as a vector image, then a detailed picture of
a product, model or location which is a raster
image. If you’re working to advertise, chances are
that you’ll be working with both raster and vector
images, so it’s useful to become familiar with them
both.

APPLICATIONS
 Computer Art:
Using computer graphics we can create fine and
commercial art which include animation
packages, paint packages. These packages
provide facilities for designing object shapes and
specifying object motion.Cartoon drawing,
paintings, logo design can also be done.
 Computer Aided Drawing:
Designing of buildings, automobile, aircraft is
done with the help of computer aided drawing,
this helps in providing minute details to the
drawing and producing more accurate and sharp
drawings with better specifications.
 Presentation Graphics:
For the preparation of reports or summarising
the financial, statistical, mathematical, scientific,
economic data for research reports, managerial
reports, moreover creation of bar graphs, pie
charts, time chart, can be done using the tools
present in computer graphics.
 Entertainment:

Computer graphics finds a major part of its utility

in the movie industry and game industry. Used for
creating motion pictures , music video, television
shows, cartoon animation films. In the game
industry where focus and interactivity are the key
