Chapter 5 Learning Objectives

1. Identify chiral / achiral compounds.

2. Draw mirror images – be able to draw a mirror image properly for mirrors to
the left/right, top/bottom, front/back.
3. Label carbons with R/S as appropriate. Recognize when these labels are
necessary and when they are not necessary.
4. Label alkenes with E/Z as appropriate. Recognize when these labels are
necessary and when they are not necessary.
5. Calculate the ee% if given the optical rotation (α) and vice versa.
6. Determine the amount of an enantiomer present given the ee% and vice
versa.
7. Determine the relationship between two structures (same, enantiomers,
diastereomers, constitutional isomers, unrelated).
8. Convert between Fischer projections and perspective drawings.
9. Determine the number of possible stereoisomers given a skeletal structure
or a name.
10. Determine the number of actual stereoisomers given a skeletal structure or
a name.
11. Draw all the stereoisomers given a skeletal structure or a name.
12. Draw a specific stereoisomer given a name.
13. Identify which properties are the same and which are different between
pairs of enantiomers or pairs of diastereomers.
14. Explain the underlying principle behind chiral resolution.
