Essential Electrical Safety Devices

This document lists and describes 10 common electrical safety devices: circuit breakers, fuses, ground fault circuit interrupters, protective relays, surge protectors, PolySwitches, lightning arresters, gas discharge tubes, metal oxide varistors, and residual current circuit breakers. These devices help protect electrical circuits and equipment from damage caused by overcurrent, short circuits, surges, ground faults, and lightning strikes.

20 Electrical Safety Devices

1. Circuit Breaker
Is an electrical safety device designed to protect an electrical circuit
from damage caused by an overcurrent or short circuit.

2. Fuse
A fuse is an electrical safety device that operates to provide
overcurrent protection of an electrical circuit.

3. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters

Is an inexpensive electrical device that can either be installed in
your electrical system or built into a power cord to protect you
from severe electrical shocks.

4. Protective Relays
A protective relay is a relay device designed to trip a
circuit breaker when a fault is detected.

5. Surge Protectors
It prevent damage to electronic equipment from voltage
"spikes" called transients.
6. PolySwitch
the PolySwitch device, however, resets after the fault is
cleared and power to the circuit is removed.

7. Lightning Arrester
is a device used on electric power transmission and
telecommunication systems to protect the insulation
and conductors of the system from the damaging
effects of lightning.

8. Gas Discharge Tubes

Gas discharge tubes dissipate voltage transients through a
contained plasma gas.

9. Metal Oxide Varistor

A varistor is an electronic component with an electrical resistance
that varies with the applied voltage.

10. RRCB
A residual-current device, residual-current circuit breaker or
ground fault circuit interrupter is an electrical safety device that
quickly breaks an electrical circuit with leakage current to
ground.
