Reflective Journal on Cognitive Development Theory

Cognitive development means how children think, explore and figure things out. It is the
development of knowledge, skills, problem solving and dispositions, which help children
to think about and understand the world around them. Brain development is part of
cognitive development.

Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development suggests that children move through four
different stages of learning. His theory focuses not only on understanding how children
acquire knowledge, but also on understanding the nature of intelligence.

You must understand what skills are typical for children of certain ages, what is
appropriate for an individual child, and what is valued by families and communities to
effectively serve the preschoolers in your classroom. You should use this knowledge to
make daily decisions about the learning experiences you offer children.
