Welcome to our first learning post! This Monday, let’s discuss education with these
below celebrities who have embodied diverse spirits. From Wednesday onwards,
newsletters will be updated at 8 a.m., so have a nice day and check out this one first!

The Polgar sisters

The sisters’ saga may cast light on the knotty question of why so few women are
elite performers in math and hard sciences. But in the Polgars’ case, a unique
upbringing and the idiosyncrasies of chess itself further complicate the picture.

Judit, Susan, and Sophia grew up in a veritable chess cocoon spun by their father,
Laszlo, the intellectual equivalent of Serena and Venus Williams’ autocratic tennis
dad, Richard.

The myth of 10000-hour practice

Late specializing: Students have time to try different domains to find their
appropriate tendency. They become more determined with their job, as well as find
passion and persistence to earn high incomes.

Hyperspecialization can backfire greatly by rendering workers unadaptable to the

changing work environment. They win in the short term (more employable right
after career-focused education) and lose in the long run (unable to adapt)

Famous people who exerted themselves

Undeterred by potential failures and injuries, Hanyu Yuzuru, a Japanese athlete
known as the “prince of figure skating”, challenged himself in the Beijing Winter
Olympic 2022 by trying the 4A, or Quad Axel, regarded as the most difficult move
in six criteria of figure skating.

Prof. Omar Yaghi is a Jordan-American scientist who invented Metal-Organic

Frameworks. As a poor boy in a 10-member household, he did not have money to
buy time. But he had always been interested in molecular models even since he did
not know of Chemistry. Growing up, he harbored the dream of leveraging life
quality with the creation of a new coin-sized material.

Putting pressure on children: Lang Lang is a piano mogul in China, the first Asian
to ever play in the Vienna and Berlin philharmonic orchestra. Back when he was
nine, his father told him to kill himself, knowing that his teacher said Lang Lang
had no future. Prior to that, Lang Lang had to practice playing the piano for 65% of
the day, even beaten. His father believed that pressure would turn into motivation.
Lang Lang disagrees, stating that he knows his choice. I believe that no matter
how you train your kid, you need to give them love. Sometimes my father pushed
me too much, but he loved me.

Gap year
The famous founder of Apple, Steve Jobs spent months in India, meditating in the
mountains and learning how to tap into what is important to him

Three years of teaching English in Portugal allowed J.K. Rowling to craft her
vision of the young wizarding world for the Harry Potter series with a yearning for
British scenery.
