The course is intended for use by: * adult students who are studying English for the first time. * adult students who already have some knowledge of English but who need to practise their reading and writing skills at a very basic level The course has arisen out of the need to provide a basic course of study for adult students in the Arab world. Itis the kind of course recommended for students who are perhaps beginning a training pro- gramme for a job which may involve further English language and subject- specific study either in their own country or overseas in an English-speaking coun- ty. It is vitally important for people who will need English for occupational and/or study purposes to develop reading and writing skills hand in hand with speaking and listening skills. This course places ‘emphasis on the importance of becoming literate in English, 2. Aims of the course The course aims to: * guide the learner towards literacy in English * develop reading and writing skills, * practise language relevant to. the learning situation. * introduce the learner to the kinds of activity which take place in the modern language classroom. * introduce the learner to the regular- ies and imegularities of the English spelling system * encourage the learner to enjoy and become skilled at learning a foreign language. * encourage the learner to accept responsibility for his own learning, 4 Introduction lll 3) S galyall eat! 138 sel gh 1 ANGI SLA Guy pall sa sel ail TAU pete Sed Gy HULA! Course organisation a) The Student's Book This contains an introductory ‘Basic Unit’, followed by 10 units of four lessons each. The answers for all the exercises appear at the end of the book. One of the most important principles of this book is that it assumes that the people who use it approach their course of study with a sense of realism and responsibility. There is absolutely nothing to be gained from looking at the answers prior to com- pleting the exercises. The answers are printed so that you may work at your own pace and check if the work has been done correctly. Atthe end of each unit you will be given a test. Your score on these unit tests will allow you to see just what has been learned and what needs looking at again. Appendices include: * a tapescript section containing a tran- script of the pronunciation exercises on side 2 of the cassette © an answer section containing answers to all the exercises which appear in the units. * a dictionary section containing all the words introduced in this book. b) The cassette Side 2 of the cassette contains a unit-by- unit pronunciation guide to the sound/ spelling patterns presented in the course. cgellyall geal aula lll US (5 9 Je ESI Nha esha Bas) os Bang SS lilly .
