Life story: Hi Carla I've been talking to Dad about our family history and I've found out some interesting things about his brother Giacomo, four Uncle Jack. Well, apparently, he was a professional footballer for a few years in the 1950s! Jack left school at 16 in 1948 and worked ina car factory in Newcastle for five years. While he was working there, he used to play football every Saturday for the factory team, One day some men came to watch him from Newcastle United. They offered him a contract so in 1953 Jack left the car factory and became a professional footballer. Apparently, he played for Newcastle United from 1953 until 1959 and scored over 100 goals for them. However, he broke his leg badty in 1959 and had to give up playing professional footbal ‘After that, he got a job as a sports teacher at a local secondary school and that’s where he met his wife, ‘Auntie Giulia. She was an Art teacher. They fell in love and got married two years later, in 1961. Our cousins Luigi and Anna were born in 1962 and 1964. As you know, we left Great Britain and came to live here in Australia in 1965, so it was quite difficult for Dad and Uncle jack to keep in touch after that Meanwhile, in 1969 Uncle Jack and Auntie Giulia opened an Italian restaurant called La Forchetta in the centre of Newcastle. During the 1970s and 1980s this, was the most popular Italian restaurant in Newcastle. Sadly, In 1992 Uncle Jack was killed in a car crash and ‘Auntie Giulia decided to sell the restaurant. When I travel to the UK on business later this year, 'm planning to meet our cousins, Luigi and Anna. None of her friends were online and she had at least another 500 words to write. Suddenly, there was a noise from outside. Jen went over to the window, opened the curtains just a centimetre and put one eye very carefully to the gap. It had been raining that day and the streets were as cold, black and wet as a dog's nose. Does that make you feel depressed? Ifyou answered ‘yes! to ‘those two questions, what can you do to find happiness? The answers to these questions can be worth their weight in gold last year, people spent almost $11 billion on ‘self- help’ books, These books promise to make us more confident, more sociable and more ‘successful. They tell us that all we really need to find love and achieve our goals isa positive attitude. Ifyou are amused by promises like these, then Oliver Burkeman’s book The Antidote ‘might just be for you. Burkeman has travelled the world in search of happiness and he hhas found itin some very unusual places. For example, he meets poor people in Aftica ‘who seem to be happier than some wealthy people he knows in London, For Burkeman, this shows us that people who do not own very much cannot worry about losing it. In other words, having a lot of things can add a lot of stress to our lives. Of course he is not saying that poor people in Africa have an easy life Instead, Burkeman uses this example to talk about ‘negative paths: ‘A‘negative path’ is important fora satisfying life. He suggests that we need to remind ourselves that bad things happen and that we should learn to live with them, True happiness -ifit exists ~ must include both positive and negative experiences. A complete life should be one that knows hate as well as love and illness as well as health. In my favourite part ofthe book, Burkeman takes us to a small village in Mexico on the Day of the Dead. The Day of the Dead isa festival that celebrates everyone who has died. However, itis nota sad festival at all, but a colourful party for friends and family. ‘According to Burkeman, we need events like this to remember why we should be happy ‘more often. All around the word, we hear stores of terible weather becoming even worse For instance, while forests in ‘Australia ae on fr, fields in Egypt are covered in snow. Environmental scientists explain that events such as these are due to climate change, They say that if we cannot protect the environment from pollution, we will Gefnitely destroy the Earth, and everything and everyone that lives ont. Despite this, there are stil many people ‘who say that scientists have been Wing fo us and there is no such thing as climate change, This essay wil look at ‘both sides ofthe argument to see whois tling the truth B Fist of al itis necessary to remember that scientfic opinion has changed many times since the end of the ‘Second World War. For example, in the 1950s, average temperatures in many counties seemed to be rising, Some of the word's best scientists said tha this proved thatthe world was becoming hatter However, nthe early 1970s ‘the world began to freeze. Many counties had the worst winters they had ever known, Asa resul, sietists made new predictions: the word was nat becoming hotter, but much colder. After the freezing winters ofthe 1970, wold temperatures began to rise again inthe 1980s and 1990s, ‘Sientsts changed their predictions again and decided that the worid was now becoming too hat. © Some people have said that these examples prove that imate change does not exist. And itis true that scientists have made mistakes. However, | don’t believe this means that they are wrong about climate change, ven with advanced technology It's vey ofl to make predictions about the future of weather. The environment is very complex. consists of bilions of creatures and we should also remember that natural environments such as jungles, deserts and mountains are also alve. Therefore itis hard for environmental scientists to make accurate preclctions about the weather aecause all ving things change all the time, So athough scientific predictions ‘can sometimes be wrong, it does not mean that climate ‘change isnot real. In conclusion, environmental scientists have not invented climate change. They have mace mistakes but the important pont is not wether the world is becoming hotter or colder but thatthe climate is becoming worse, We have ‘an opportunity to prevent ciate change and take action, © Write an essay, Read the question below. How easy or difficult do you think it might be for wheelchair users. to get around your hometown? Make notes about: * public tansport (do busestainstrams have disabled access?) * things to do and places to vist (fs it easy to visit a museum cr go shopping?) Use your notes to write a short review of disabled access for wheelchair users where you live. FOR DISABLED This week is the first anniversary of mayor Alex Walker's promise to make {ife in our city easier for disabled people. One year on, we asked disabled athlete Ayesha Omar to tell us about her experiences in the city. Just over a year ago, City News invited me here for the day to do an interview; it ‘tumed out to be a visit I will never forget = unfortunately, forall the wrong reasons. ‘As someone in a wheelchair, it was almost impossible for me to get around the city. ‘There was not nearly enough access to public transport and I discovered that taxis ‘were no better: none of them had the special doors I need to carry my wheelchair. The day was such a nightmare that I decided to write a story about my experience in the paper. After I wrote my story, mayor Alex ‘Walker promised to make things better in the city and gave £6 million to the project. Last week, I retuned to see if the city had improved. 1 arrived atthe train station early in the ‘moming. One year ago, the station had only Ihad stairs up to the exit. That meant that three men had to carry me off the platform which was by far the most embarrassing thing that happened to me during my last visi This year, I saw immediatly that they thad built new lift.‘Wonderful!” I thought — but then I remembered something ~ the buttons. On ‘normal’ lifts, the buttons are sometimes too high for a person in 4 wheelchair. That means that T have to ask someone to push the buttons for me. However, the lift in the station had buttons that were much lower so Iwas able to push ‘them myself was really pleased with this. 1 decided to take a taxi into the city ‘enire, so first ofall I needed to get some money from the bank. Again, Tam very pleased to say that when T found the line of three cash machines outside the station, fone of them was lower than the other two and soit was the right height for wheelchair users. Later that day, took a bus and a ‘ram and visited all the main, museums, sgzlleries and shopping centres. There was access for wheelchair users everywhere | ‘went. Things are sill not perfect and there is a Tong way to go but I ean honestly say that Alex Walker has kept his promise 10 lisabled people inthe city! 38
