Course Materials
What is Industrial Engineering?
Industrial engineering is the branch of engineering that involves figuring out how to make or do things better.
Industrial engineers are concerned with reducing production costs, increasing efficiency, improving the quality
of products and services, ensuring worker health and safety, protecting the environment and complying with
government regulations. (https://www.livescience.com/48250-industrial-engineering.html)

The American Institute of Industrial Engineers defined the field of Industrial Engineering as: concerned with the
design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, equipment and energy. It
draws upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical and social sciences together with
the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict and evaluate the results to be
obtained from the system. (Handbook of Industrial Engineering: Technology and Operations Management 3rd
Ed; by Gavriel Salvendy).

Industrial Engineering is a branch of applied sciences and engineering knowledge applied to the design,
planning and control of industrial operations by integrating people, materials and energy in a productive way.
(Slideshare.net industrial Engineering in Apparel Industry).
Industrial Engineering is concerned with the development, improvement, implementation and evaluation of
integrated systems of people, money, knowledge. Information, equipment, energy,
materials and analysis.(https://www.slideshare.net/PradeepPoornishankarP/industrial-engineering-14907817)
Industrial Engineering is the engineering approach applied to all factors, including the human factor, involved in
the production and distribution of products and services.( https://www.slideshare.net/muhundhanmurugasen/ie-

The History of Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineering can be traced back to the start of the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century. Some
of the early practitioners of industrial engineering include:
Samuel Colt, who pioneered the assembly line
Henry Laurence Gantt , who developed cost, selection of workers, training, good incentive plans, and
scheduling of work. He is the originator of the Gantt chart.
Henry Ford, who implemented the assembly line for automobile manufacturing
Eliyahu M. Goldratt, who developed the Theory of Constraints (TOC), which identified the most significant
limiting factor in a process — the "bottleneck" — and ways to improve it until it is no longer the constraint.
Charles W. Babbage, a mathematics professor who developed the learning curve, the division of task and how
learning is affected, and the effect of learning on the generation of waste.
Henry R. Towne and Fredrick A. Halsey, developed the wage incentive plans to the ASME (American Society
of Mechanical Engineers) increase the productivity of workers without negatively affecting the cost of
production.
Fredrick Winslow Taylor, the best known of the pioneers in industrial engineering. He was done potential
improvements to be gained through analyzing the work content (minimum amount of work required to
accomplish the task) of a job and designing the job for maximum efficiency. He is also known as the Father of
Industrial Engineers.
Frank Bunker Gilbreth and his wife Dr. Lillian M. Gilbreth, worked on understanding fatigue, skill development,
motion studies, as well as time studies.
In its early days, industrial engineering was driven almost entirely by the motive to increase the efficiency and
profitability of manufacturing operations. Since then, the continuous invention and development of new
machinery and power sources have provided new challenges for industrial engineers to find new applications
for these technologies and optimize their use to increase productivity.
Industrial Engineering courses were taught by many universities in Europe at the end of the 19 th century
including Germany, France, U.K. and Spain. In the United States, the first department of Industrial and
Manufacturing Engineering was established in 1909 at the Pennsylvania State University. The first doctoral
degree in Industrial Engineering was first awarded in the 1930s at
Cornell University. (https://www.slideshare.net/AlBahar1/application-of-industrial-engineering-techniques-in-

Functions of an Industrial Engineer

 Install data processing, management information, wage incentive systems.

 Develop performance standards, job evaluation, and wage and salary programs.
 Research new products and product applications.
 Improve productivity through application of technology and human factors.
 Select operating processes and methods to do a task with proper tools and equipment
 Design facilities, management systems, operating procedures
 Improve planning and allocation of limited resources
 Enhance plant environment and quality of people's working life
 Evaluate reliability and quality performance
 Implement office systems, procedures, and policies
 Analyze complex business problems by operations research
 Conduct organization studies, plant location surveys, and system effectiveness studies
 Study potential markets for goods and services, raw material sources, labor supply, energy resources,
financing, and taxes

Diversities of an Industrial Engineer in an organization

Industrial engineers determine the most effective ways for an organization to use the basic factors of
production - people, machines, materials, and energy.
They are more concerned with people and methods of business organization than engineers in other
specialties.
To solve organizational, production, and related problems most efficiently, industrial engineers design data
processing systems and apply mathematical analysis such as operations research.
They also develop management control systems to help in financial planning and cost analysis, design
production planning and control systems to coordinate activities and control product quality, and design or
improve systems for the physical distribution of goods and services.
Industrial engineers conduct surveys to find plant locations with the best combination of raw materials, and
transportation. They also develop wage and salary administration systems and job evaluation programs.
