I will take this examination to the best of my abilities, without seeking or accepting the help of any
source not explicitly allowed by the conditions of the examination.
I have neither given nor received, nor have I tolerated others’ use of unauthorized aid.
Not complying with the statement invalidates the examination for summative use, that is, a grade
will not be assigned to your completed examination.

Exercise 1 (6 points)
At the moment, the prices of the shares I and II are e5 and e10, respectively. Let X be the price
of share I next month and let Y be the price of share II next month. The joint probability density
function of X and Y is as follows:
y
h( x, y)
9 10 11
5 0.20 0.05 0.10
x 6 0 0.20 0.10
7 0.20 0.15 0
Exercise 2 (5 points)
A researcher is interested in the random variable X =’ the number of non-European multinational
companies that have a European headquarters by country’. The table below provides the frequency
distribution of X for a random sample of 90 non-European multinational companies.
country frequency
UK 32
The Netherlands 17
Switzerland 17
Germany 13
France 11
Total 90
c) (3p) Let p denote the proportion of non-European multinational companies that have headquarters
in the Netherlands. Can we conclude that p > 0.10? Use a suitable 99% confidence interval
to answer this question. Write down the interval estimator (i.e., the formula), the resulting
interval, and the conclusion with explanation.

Exercise 3 (7 points)
Researchers conducted a study on the number of employees of startups in a certain industry. Let
X denote the number of employees of startups in a certain industry. The table below presents the
relative frequency distribution of X for a random sample of 60 startups in that industry.
Without further computation you may use that the sample standard deviation s X = 0.9708.
c) (5p) Let µ be the population mean number of employees of startups in that industry. Can we conclude
that µ is unequal to 8? Use a suitable hypothesis test with significance level α = 0.05 to answer
this question. Explicitly provide all 5 steps of the testing procedure.

Exercise 4 (6 points)
32% of startups in a certain country have startup capital less than e10,000. Suppose that we draw
a random sample of 48 startups in that country. Let P̂ denote the sample proportion of startups that
have startup capital less than e10,000. According to the Central Limit Theorem P̂ is approximately
normally distributed.
Exercise 5 (6 points)
A researcher is interested in the relationship between education and hourly wage. To explain the
variation of Y=’hourly wage (in euro)’ from X=’years of schooling’ in a certain country, the researcher
uses a simple linear regression model on a random sample of 42 workers in that country. For these
data, the equation of the sample regression line is ŷ = 5.97 + 1.918x, the standard error of B1 is
0.0523 and the coefficient of determination R2 is 0.723.
b) (5p) Can we conclude that 1 year increase in years of schooling will on average lead to less than
e2 increase in hourly wage? Use a suitable hypothesis test with significance level α = 0.05 to
answer this question. Explicitly provide all 5 steps of the testing procedure.
