Evolution of Non-profit organizations and/Role of organizations in

sustainibility and social responsibility
Companies in age of 21st century are accountable for fulfilling their civic duty,
and the actions of an individual/conpanies/organizations must benefit the whole
of society.
To please consumers, many companies now practice corporate social
responsibility. Corporate social responsibility (CSR), also known as corporate
citizenship, is a business concept in which social and environmental concerns
are integrated into a company’s operations.
Example
Whole Foods Market CEO John Mackey refers to CSR as conscious capitalism,
in which businesses “serve the interests of all major stakeholders—customers,
employees, investors, communities, suppliers, and the environment.”
5

Mackey witnessed the benefits of conscious capitalism when a Whole Foods

Market store was terribly affected by a flood. Unexpectedly, customers and
neighbors helped, employees worked for free, suppliers resupplied products on
credit, and its bank loaned it money to restock. The Whole Foods store was able
to reopen 28 days after the flood.

History
6

Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan is a continuation of half a century old tradition

of relief and philanthropic work. Its services actually started with the creation of
Pakistan. With the vision of SERVE TO HUMANITY Alkhidmat Foundation
Pakistan” registered in 1990, as an NGO under the Societies ACT.
Muhammad Abdus Shakoor (Founder and President Alkhidmat Foundation
Pakistan).
large number of migrants from the former East Pakistan poured in Orangi Town,
after the Dhaka Fall on December 16, 1971. Orangi Town was then a settlement
with no civic facilities. Al-Khidmat Welfare Society had started several projects
for migrated people, so that they could be settled properly. It had constructed
houses, established educational institutions and provided clean drinking water
for them.
Al-Khidmat envisaged a major hospital in 1974. A plot admeasuring 4800 sq.
m. was acquired for this purpose. Plan was made for setting up a hospital of 200
beds and the lay-out plan was also prepared, while the name proposed was Shah
Khalid Hospital. Syed Abul Ala Maududi (RA) had contributed a sum of
RS.400000/= for the hospital project. This was in fact a part of the prize money
of Shah Faisal Award, conferred upon him by the Saudi Government, in
recognition of his services for the Islamic world.
The members of the project committee, Shah Khalid Hospital were Dr. Abdul
Majeed, Dr. Iftikhar Ahmed (late), Dr. Iqbal Ghaiyur and Mr. Niamatullah Khan
Advocate.
Work could not continue on this project, for some 1994, a famous social worker
and a member of Pakistan Islamic Medical Association, Dr. Faiyaz Alam
proposed an alternate plan for the aforesaid plot. Mr. Niamatullah Khan
Advocate, President Al-Khidmat Welfare Society, Karachi approved the plan,
after consulting with Osama Ismail Murad, Secretary Al-Khidmat and Ashraf
Awan, President Distt. West and constituted the Project Committee.
7

The idea giver, Dr. Faiyaz Alam was assigned the duties of Project Director. He
had worked day & night to make the dream come true, during the 1994-1998
tenure and was able to complete the first phase, with the help of volunteers of
Al-Khidmat (District West) and philanthropists.
Al-Khidmat Hospital, Orangi Town had become the milestone in the Health
Department of Al-Khidmat Welfare Society, as it was the foremost hospital of
the society, paving way for several others, by the end of 1999. Then we saw the
launch of projects like Al-Khidmat Eye-care Centre, Nazimabad, Dental care
Centre, Al-Khidmat Hospital, Nazimabad, Diagnostic Centre and Al-Khidmat
Hospital, Korangi. During the same period, the standard

The National Commission for Child Welfare and Development (NCCWD)

was established on 16th December 1979 by the Government through a
resolution being effective from 1st January 1980, which was amended from time
to time finally in 1991 under the then Ministry of Health and Social Welfare as
an advisory body to the Government of Pakistan on matters related to Children.

Social Responsibility(SR)/Corporate Social responsibility(CSR)

AlKhidmat foundation has integrated social and environmental concerns a
foundation’s operations truly based on Islamic values.
General main categories of SR include
● Environmental efforts,
● Philanthropy,
● Ethical labor practices,
● Volunteerism.
Let’s take a closer look at each of these.
Environmental sustainability efforts
Pakistan is facing multifarious social problems in 21st century ranging from
poverty to civic ignorance and malnourishment. The country stands at 145th
position at Human Development Index (HDI) and almost 50% of Pakistan’s
population is deprived of basic necessities. As per HDR report 27.1% Pakistanis
live under severe poverty conditions. Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan has a
vision of a stable Pakistani society and it is continuously striving to reach the
people living in harsh conditions and provide them necessary assitance through
its Community Services program. The primary motto of the welfareprogram is
to serve the deprived community by facilitating them through various
interventions by local and international donors for meeting their pressing needs.
17

These interventions are often related to weather conditions, festivals or special

needs of the communities.
Activities ;
DISASTER MANAGEMENT
Geographically, Pakistan is located in a region where climatic extremes and
geophysical conditions make it a disaster-prone country. Different natural
hazards affect different parts of the country. A significant portion of Sindh is
also vulnerable to drought and heatwaves. Every year, people die from the heat

in the Thar Desert, but in 2015, the effect of rising temperatures extended to the
coastal metropolitan city of Karachi, killing many people. Alkhidmat
Foundation, being one of the most active humanitarian organizations has
established a self-sufficient emergency response mechanism. While
continuously remaining in the disaster management field, we have mastered up
many techniques that involve multiple processes of active coordination and
collaboration,operational practices, strategies, and skills. They have ;
● Volunteers
● Ration Packages for flood affectees
● 31 Response Hubs
● Conduct Trainings
● 1270 Shelter Homes
● 1205 Winter Package
● Hygiene Kits for Docters/nurses/volunteers/rescue teams
● Cooked Food
● Face Masks
● Hand Sanitizers
● Dengue Sprays
● Sewing Machines
STRUGGLE of Alkhidmat foundation AGAINST DENGUE
18

Alkhidmat Foundation besides raising awareness about dengue has been taking
practical steps. Our volunteers went door to door and carried out spray at public
places such as schools, railway and bus stations, public parks, minority worship
places, hospitals and in other places in Karachi and Lahore.
SAVING LIVES AMID TERRIBLE EARTHQUAKE
Alkhidmat rescuers had to face difficulties in reaching owing to broken roads,
poor mobile phone coverage and lack of electricity.

Considering the poor community and marginalized area, Alkhidmat Foundation

promptly responded to
this emergency to cater to the basic needs of the affected local residents by
providing them with shelter, medical assistance, food, and water. Alkhidmat
volunteers shifted the injured to a local hospital. Since majority of homes in the
Harnai area are made of mud and stone they went through irreparable damage
forcing people become homeless.
GETTING READY FOR MONSOON CHALLENGES
Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan Karachi chapter provided rescue and relief
supplies to 12 relief emergency centers across the city to deal with any
emergency likely to occur during monsoon rains.
Chief Executive Alkhidmat Karachi, Naveed Ali Baig handed over these
supplies in a ceremony. The equipment included oxygen cylinders, long shoes,
spray boxes, jackets, bags, boats, safety equipment
and suction pumps. Volunteers in Karachi remain vigilant round the clock to
deal with any emergency
in collaboration with the relevant government agencies.

improving health awareness among different work segments of Pakistani
society, about various diseases and viral infections.
Patients are checked and given free medicines and medical advice. Experienced
doctors and paramedical staff are deputed in Alkhidmat camps who provide
medical treatment in general healthcare. Besides medical facility, the objective
is to educate the patients on personal health, hygiene, childcare, preventions of
diseases and sanitation of living areas.
SURGERY FOR LIFE...A MISSION OF CLEFT LIP AND
PALATE RECOVERY FOR CHILDREN IN THARPARKAR & MULTAN
20

In chain of Alkhidmat Hospital and medical units in Tharparkar and Multan,

free surgeries of cleft lip and palate are carried out successfully. Moreover, local
population is provided awareness on these issues and encouraged to seek the
treatment for their children who because of negligence are not taken to hospitals
for proper treatment. Alkhidmat Foundation’s mission is to provide every child
born with curable disease the equal opportunities to get treated and start living a
normal life just like other human beings do.
Philanthropy(Telent sustainability efforts)
Philanthropy is the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially
by the generous donation of money to good causes.

charitable programs, and offering scholarships to underprivileged students
wanting to attend college.

Ethical Labor Practices (Human Sustaibility efforts)
Labor practices are often controversial from an ethical perspective.
For example, Apple’s iPhones contain parts from companies in other countries.
Specifically, the tin, which is used for a part, comes from mines in Indonesia.
With labor laws that vary from one country to another, the company exercised
due diligence in ensuring that its sourcing companies follow all applicable labor
laws in their country of operation. But it was revealed to consumers in the
United States that the tin was mined from companies in Indonesia that use child
labor. Moreover, during the mining process, laborers as young as 12 years old
were subject to the hazards of unstable soil. US consumers were appalled. To
22

address the issue, Apple instituted more robust labor practices, which were
communicated to consumers. In a statement, Apple said, “the simplest course of
action would be for Apple to unilaterally refuse any tin from Indonesian mines.
That would be easy for us to do and would certainly shield us from criticism.
But that would also be the lazy and cowardly path, since it would do nothing to
improve the situation. We have chosen to stay engaged and attempt to drive
changes on the ground.”
For improved transparency, Apple has released annual reports that include
details of its work with suppliers and their labor practices. Recent investigations
have shown some improvements to the working conditions of the employees of
Apple’s suppliers. However, the company still faces some criticism.

Volunteerism
Many companies are encouraging volunteerism by incorporating it into their
policies and establishing employee volunteer programs.
For example, some companies make a donation to the charities their employees
volunteer at, in the amount equivalent to the employees’ regular pay for the
same number of hours volunteered. Other companies offer gift cards to
employees who volunteer. Companies are finding creative ways to encourage
and reward the volunteerism of employees not only to help society and the
environment but also so that consumers and stakeholders will perceive them as
socially responsible.
