SECTION 287(g)
OF THE IMMIGRATION AND
NATIONALITY ACT
WHAT
IS SECTION 287(g)? : Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act allows local law enforcement officers to enforce national immigration laws and to act in cooperation with federal immigration and customs enforcement. Among immigrant communities, this policy has been mainly directed at the Latino population. It is objectively a form a racial profiling, and it must not be allowed if we are to build the type of caring, compassionate, safe, and just community that we all need.
WHAT
IS WRONG WITH THE 287(g) PROGRAM? : It encourages Racial Profiling. It has been shown to Disrupt Families, often resulting in uncertain and complex child custody issues. It Takes Resources from Communities and Programs meant to help our immigrant communities. It Undermines Trust and Cooperation with immigrant communities. It places the Complexity of Federal Immigration Law Enforcement on local authorities. It resembles the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 and 1850, used against African Americans in the past.
WHO
AUTHORIZED THIS PROGRAM FOR GUILFORD COUNTY? This program is connected to the County Sheriffs Office, and Sheriff BJ Barnes has authorized this programs activation in Guilford County in April 2009. Although immigration reform is needed, the 287(g) Program is not the way. Community members in other counties in North Carolina are fighting this racially motivated policy. We must do likewise.
WHAT
CAN WE DO ABOUT IT 1. Speak to Sheriff BJ Barnes on March 30th, at 6:30 PM, at New Light Missionary Baptist Church. Lets encourage him to seek a better way. 2. Sign the Petition that stands against this program during the community event on March 30th. 3. Stay connected to other movements in the community and become more socially aware.
?:
THIS EFFORT? It is the Right Thing To Do!!! In the struggle for Racial and Economic Justice, we stand for those that have being marginalized and labeled as less than. And, because this program painfully resembles the Fugitive Slave Act, we cannot repeat that bitter side of our history. We are better than that!!!
