REVIEW: The fifth edition of this introductory college textbook on entomology has a companion website which
provides access to powerpoints and the book's abundant, unusually fine black and white illustrations, by Karina H.
McInnes. It functions as a stand-alone textbook for entomology courses and a companion text for majors in fields
from ecology to systematics to natural resources and agriculture. This edition has been revised to reflect recent
changes in both the world and the field of entomology. A new chapter on insects in a changing world has been
added, looking at the serious effects of climate change and global free trade on insect populations, and the
consequences for wild and human-made environments. New developments in molecular genetics have clarified the
relationships of insects, often confirming previous taxonomic categories, and added more information on insect
evolution. Chapter texts have been updated, and many new text boxes and illustrations have been added. There is
an additional focus in this edition on new activities in entomology supported by citizen scientists and entrepreneurs,
and on new threats to agriculture created by the spread of insect pests due to economic globalism; biosecurity has a
new emphasis. Students should have previous courses in biology for the sake of comfort with the abundant technical
terms and passive-voice style, but the illustrations, strong organization, and more informally-written text boxes give
the book extra clarity and appeal. (© Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR)
