Public Relations vs. Communication Management

Significant overlap exists between public relations and communication management. Both entail

communicating information in an effort to build a name, an image, or a connection that promotes value. After

reading Richard Bailey's online article titled "Public relations as communication management," I have come to the

opinion that there are differences between public relations and communication management.

Public relations (PR) is the set of techniques and strategies related to managing how information about an

individual or company is disseminated to the public, and especially the media. Its primary goals are to disseminate

important company news or events, maintain a brand image, and put a positive spin on negative events to

minimize their fallout. PR may occur in the form of a company press release, news conference, interviews with

journalists, social media posting, or other venues. 1 Meanwhile, Communication management involves the

planning, execution, monitoring and improvement of communication processes within a team or an organization.

There are two types of communication, internal and external. Internal management of communication refers to

relaying messages within an organization, such as exchanging information between leaders, participants and team

members. External communication focuses on cooperation between two or more companies or organizations. It

can establish a rapport between the company and its target

audiences, such as vendors, consumers and media outlets, to convey relevant information to these stakeholders. 2

Public relations and Management communication are closely connected disciplines, yet they also have some

significant differences. These variations largely have to do with the range of communication involved and the

common methods by which individuals transmit information. Public relations may frequently serve as a one-way

channel that imposes information on people in an effort to improve their perception of the organization or a

person.On the other hand, it's possible that the two-way feature of seeking information and making improvements

in response to the information obtained is where the core of communication management lies.

Advertising-like in nature, communication management is frequently done with business objectives in mind.

Public relations experts are in charge of managing an organization's or person’s reputation in the eyes of the

general public. Public relations differs from advertising or marketing in that it frequently aims to look natural and

may not always try to promote a product or service. Compared to public relations, which primarily focuses on

people, communication management is better appropriate for businesses.

Since we can see commonalities, I completely understand and respect those individuals, experts, or

practitioners who believe that public relations and communication are one. However, they seem distinct to me. In

addition to the other reasons I've listed above, I view communication management as the planning process; it

provides the answers to the five W questions, serving as a draft for a

successful objective, such as "What to do? When to do it? Where to do it? Who is the target audience? And the

like," while public relations is the execution of the plan. Although I'm not really sure, that is what I believe to be

true.

Whether they are one or not, what matters to me is that you accomplish what you set out to do. Public

relations and communication management are only the means through which you can achieve your objectives.
