Ideas for Use
Decide if you'd like to use the Animated Video Lesson or Lesson on Individual Slides to
teach about Positive Self-Talk. Also decide if you want to use Google Slides™, Boom
Learning™ (both great for distance learning) or the direct MP4 file. (and project on a
SmartBoard, for example). Note: the Boom™ deck does not contain the video, but rather
individual cards with audio.
There are two different versions of the Animated VIDEO: one with pre-recorded narration
and one without narration. I've included the MP4s as separate files, which you can find in
the zip file. You can also find the pre-recorded animated Video on Google Slides (links "C"
and "D").
To record your own voice, use the Animated Video without narration. There are many apps
and software available to record a voiceover. For Apple/Mac devices, the iMovie app/software
works great for recording.
Before recording, I suggest practicing so that your narration aligns with the video. Although
the video contains the entire script, I've also included the script on pages 10-12 in this pdf.
For students who are emerging readers or for whom English is a second language, consider
using either the Boom™ or Google Slides™ with audio recordings (options B, D, and E on
page 7).
To use this lesson in person, in a traditional classroom setting or group and/or individual
counseling setting, consider showing your students the video or Google Slides™ presentation,
and depending on the time, have them fill out the worksheets and/or deepen their learning
using the printable cards.
Here are some ways you can use the printable cards:
-Have students sort cards into Positive Self-Talk versus Negative Self-Talk (or Inner Coach
versus Inner Critic)
-Using the cards with illustrations, play a matching game like Memory (choose how many
pairs you'd like use, place them face down, and have students find matches).
-Choose 20-30 cards, number them 1-20 or 1-30 (depending on how many cards you use)
and have students play Scoot using worksheet on page . For each card, students mark
whether the self-talk statement is coming from an Inner Critic or Inner Coach (or are
negative versus positive self-talk or unhelpful versus helpful thoughts.)
-Give each student a card and ask them to go around the room and find their match.
-Discuss different situations someone might use this self-talk.
-Read the cards out loud; have the students to stand up tall in a power pose anytime a
positive self-talk statement is read, and sit down anytime a negative self-talk statement is
read.
-If working with an individual or small group, ask student(s) to identify self-talk statements
they have thought before (either positive or negative.). Also, ask them to pick out positive
self-talk statements that might be helpful for them to use in different situations.

Positive Self-Talk Script
Have you ever noticed silently telling yourself something or thinking
thoughts that you don't necessarily say out loud? Almost like you're having
a private conversation with your brain that only you can hear?
This is called self-talk. It's something that all of us do. And it's totally
normal.
In fact, self-talk happens so often that you may not even realize that it's
going on sometimes.
In this lesson, we're going to focus on 2 different types of self-talk;
negative self-talk and positive self-talk.
Negative self-talk is when you "speak to yourself" in a way that is unhelpful
or hurtful. If you've ever put yourself down, believed that you're not good
enough, called yourself a mean name, or told yourself that no one likes you,
then you have used negative self-talk.
Have you ever used negative self-talk before?
You can think of negative self-talk as messages that come from your Inner
Critic. Your Inner Critic is not something you can see or touch, but it's
more like a part of your brain that contains hurtful beliefs about yourself
that are mostly NEVER true.
Your Inner Critic can be judgmental, likes to blame you, and might try to
make you believe that there is something wrong with you.
What is something your Inner Critic has told you before?
When your Inner Critic is using negative self-talk, you might notice that
you feel helpless, depressed, or really bad about yourself.
What about you? How do you feel when your Inner Critic is telling you
something?
Then it gets really tricky and sticky, because the more negative self-talk
you use, the worse you will likely feel about yourself, and the worse you
feel about yourself, the more likely you are going use negative self-talk. In
other words, it's easy to get stuck in a cycle of negative self-talk.
But the good news is that you can get unstuck from the cycle of negative
self-talk, by using, can you guess what it is..
You got it! That's right, positive self-talk!
Positive self-talk is when you "speak to yourself" like you would to a good
friend or to someone you love and care about. If you've ever told yourself
you did a great job, encouraged yourself to learn or try something new,
thought of yourself as awesome, brave, strong, smart, or kind, or reminded
yourself that you are important, likable, and lovable, then you have used
positive self-talk.
Have you ever used positive self-talk before?
You can think of positive self-talk as messages that come from your Inner
Coach.
Your Inner Coach is not something you can see or touch, but it's more like
a part of your brain that contains helpful beliefs about yourself that are
almost ALWAYS true.
Your Inner Coach cheers you on, encourages you, and is optimistic and
hopeful. Your Inner Coach helps you to come up with a game plan to deal
with hard things. Your Inner Coach knows that it's okay if you make a
mistake, and that just because you might have done something "bad", that
does not make you a bad person. Because your Inner Coach believes in
your goodness, worth, and lovability.. no matter what.
What is something your Inner Coach has told you before?
When your Inner Coach is using positive self-talk, you might notice that
you feel courageous, confident, or self-compassionate.
What about you? How do you feel when your Inner Coach is telling you
something?
When you find yourself using negative self-talk, or speaking to yourself in
an unhelpful or hurtful way, you can remind yourself, "Oh, that's my Inner
Critic talking right now."
And then you can ask yourself, "Would I speak to my good friend in this
way?" and, "What would my Inner Coach say instead?"
Channeling his Inner Coach, what positive self-talk can Rio use right now?
Learning to replace negative self-talk with positive self-talk takes practice.
A lot of practice.
It's just like playing a sport or instrument, the more you practice using
positive self-talk, the better you will get at it.
And the better you get at it, the better you will feel about yourself and be
able to focus on the things you can control as you step into your power of
being amazing, awesome YOU!
Now, let's practice!
