    Alcuin of York was an English scholar born around 730 who entered the cathedral school of York where he was exposed to ecclesiastical writers. In 766 he became a professor at the school of York. In 781 he met Charlemagne and was permitted to transfer to France to teach, where he taught liberal arts, organized the education system, and founded the palace school of Aachen.
