Many managers describe performance appraisal as the responsibility which they like the

least. Why is this so? What could be done to improve this perception?

The term "performance appraisal" refers to the process of evaluating an employee's job

performance and overall contribution to the firm on a regular basis. A performance appraisal,

also known as an annual review, performance review or evaluation, or employee appraisal,

assesses an employee's abilities, accomplishments, and growth, or lack thereof (Hayes, 2021).

Performance appraisals are frequently used by businesses to provide feedback on employees'

work and to justify decisions such as salary raises, incentives, and, in some situations,

terminations (BenefitCorp, 2020). But why do certain managers like performance appraisal the

least among their responsibilities? In my observation, managers' disdain of performance

appraisal stems from a lack of understanding of its critical relevance in the workplace. Without

performance evaluations, managers would not be able to track and monitor the progress of its

employees, affecting the company’s overall performance in totality. Hence, performance

appraisal is vital for a company's advancement and employee's growth, as it assists the company

in determining if the employees are productive and efficient or burdens, the same way it helps

the employees in setting the direction of their careers. The work involved in performance

appraisals resides in the hands of a human resource (HR) manager, and thus, I think that every

HR manager out there must give priority in carrying out the associated tasks in performance

appraisal endeavors in order to foster growth and development in the company. In this way, it

would benefit both the company and its employees as a whole.
