Benjamin Ela el Wien aA BAPTIST CHURCH. inlets Moses Missionary Baptist Church was established on February 21, 1907, by Reverend J.H. Welborne. The church was organized out of the Runs Baptist Church, Old Ellenton, SC. The church was originally called the Hattie McCollough Hall (owner of the building). The name was later changed to Moses Baptist Church after the members obtained ownership of the building. The church was located on the corners of First and Walker Street in Augusta, Georgia. Moses began with eight members: Jack Cannon, Laura Cannon, Sing Cannon, Len Shaw, Mary Shaw, Shepherd Weatherbee, James Weatherbee, and Carrie Bright. The first members to be baptized were Janie Holland, Nancy Tubman, Janie Carter Parter, and Nathaniel Lark. Jack Cannon served as the first Deacon; however, Nathaniel Lark was the first to be ordained.Laura Cannon was named the first Mother of the Church. Deacon Eugene Scott was the first Superintendent of Sunday School. Deacon Drayton Gibson and Janie Holland served on the Usher Board. Deacon Gibson served as the first chief of the Usher Board. Deacon Nathaniel Lark organized the first club, “Club Number 1”. Prior to 1914, baptismal services were held at the Savannah River. In 1914, Moses partnered with Greater ‘Young Zion Baptist Church and Hale Street Baptist Church to hold baptismal services. In 1920, a baptismal pool was built on the church grounds. In 1922, Reverend J.H. Welborne’s work on earth was finished. He served as pastor for fifteen (15) years. We are eternally grateful for the spiritual and tangible legacy he left. Through his leadership, Moses began to blossom as a beacon of light in the community. After the death of Reverend Welborne, permission was granted to bury him on the church grounds. Reverend John Towers served as pastor for one (1) year to complete Reverend Welborne’s term. The church continued to move spiritually. Reverend W.H. Moody was elected pastor in 1923. The Sunday school was reorganized during his years of service. Reverend W.H. Douse (1925) and Brother Albert Bush (1928) served as Sunday School Superintendents under his leadership. Reverend Robert B. Bush, Sr. was called to pastor in 1941. Through his leadership, Moses leaped to higher heights. The following list is a summary of improvements made under Reverend Bush's leaders! Physical Improvements In 1965 - Baptismal Pool installed inside the church building. The original structure was renovated (kitchen, bathroom, and bricked). Central air was installed. In 1971 - The property adjacent to the church was purchased. It was formerly known as the George Joe Store. In 1972 - The building fund and corporate strategy was developed in preparations for building a new sanctuary. In 1976 - Two adjacent lots were purchased for the purpose of erecting a new sanctuary. In 1979 - A mimeograph machine and Xerox machine was purchased. Spiritual Improvements Anew Order of Service (Worship Schedule) was added. Previously, Moses only held evening service. Wie Ese N aa BAPTIST CHURCH CHURCH ANNIVERSARY inleper ‘Sunday school improvements were made (Deacon Johnson (1950), Brother Stallings (1963) and Deacon Fickling (1975) served as Superintendents). BTU. (Baptist Training Union) Classes were offered. ‘Male Choir was formed. ‘A Senior Choir and Youth Choir were formed. The R.B. Bush Young Adult Choir was organized by Sister Dorothy Thomas in 1972. B.L. Abraham became the musician. A Trustee Board was formed. Reverend Bush's health began to fail, and the church utilized several ministers over a period of time to help with services. Reverend Lessen Leonard served during that time. The church called Reverend Charles King to serve as Assistant Pastor. In November 1976, Reverend R.S. Dean was appointed Assistant Pastor and served in this capacity for approximately three (3) years. In 1978, beloved Deacon Charles J. Hyder was called from labor to reward. In January 1979, Reverend Robert B. Bush, Sr. completed his work here on earth and the Lord called him from labor to reward. He was our spiritual leader for thirty-eight (38) years. Three of our oldest beloved members were called from labor to reward: Sister Essie Wright Cooper, Sister Zepora Williams, and Sister Janie Parker. On August 5, 1979, Reverend R.S. Dean was installed as pastor. The following deacons were ordained under his leadership: Deacon Leroy Washington, Deacon Willie F. Downs, Deacon Williams Smith, Jr., and Deacon Jerome Sabb. He also reorganized the Trustee Board by adding six (6) members: Sister Thelma Walker, Sister Elrena Lucas, Sister Daisy Smith, Sister Mary Black, Sister Patricia Bailey, and Sister Daisy Nixon. In November, Sister Willie Mae Cox was given permission to organize a Pastor's Aid Club. During this, time, twelve (12) group building funds were organized. Bible School was also reorganized. In 1981, a loan was acquired to match the funds raised for a new church building. Bids were submitted for the construction of a new sanctuary. Alfred Johnson Construction Company was awarded the contract. On December 27, 1981 a ground-breaking ceremony was held. On September 17, 1982, prayer services were held prior to marching into our new sanctuary! Dedication services were held November 21- 28, 1982. On June 4, 1984, our eldest beloved deacon, Deacon Obie Washington Sr. was called from labor to reward. On February 4, 1985, our beloved organist, Sister Dorothy Thomas was called from labor to reward. On May 8, 1985, Deacon Simon P. Tyler was called from labor to reward. ‘On September 8, 1985, Reverend Milton Key was elected Pastor. Reverend Key's installation service was held on November 3, 1985. Under his leadership, one (1) minister was ordained, Brother Willie Shaw. Also, three deacons were ordained, Brother Earnest Harvey, Brother James, and Brother Lester Brooks. In 1986, Sister Eunice Harden was selected as the president of the Pastor’s Aide Ministry, Sister Dorothy Williams as Vice President, and Sister Clara Grant as Secretary. On April 6, 1987, a cornerstone was constructed, Sidewalks were placed on Walker Street and on both sides of the church. In addition, the church purchased the property adjacent to the church. On July 7, 1987, Mother Emeritus Louise Washington was called from labor to reward. Past presidents of Women’s Mission: Sister Rosa Brown, Sister Janie Holland, Sister Ella Glover, Sister Annie Smiley, Sister Mary Black, Sister Elease DeWalt, and Sister Emma King. In 1990, the outreach program was organized to add strength to the Youth and Community. Deacon Leroy Washington, Deacon Earnest Harvey, and Brother Henry Wynn implemented the 300 Club. Allproceeds from the 300 Club andMen’s and Women’s Day went towards the mortgage. The mortgage was burned on December 15, 1991. The following members were called from labor to reward: Sister Eunice Harden (June 25, 1992); Deacon Jessie Brown (October 3, 1992);Deacon James DeWalt (September 10, 1993); and Deacon Robert Beck (August 8, 1994). The parking lot was paved in 1993. In 1994, the Knox Foundation assisted the church in purchasing four (4) parcels of land in the community. On March 23, 1997, Reverend Milton Key resigned as pastor. The church continued to move forward with God's help. On December 22, 1997, Reverend Grady Wilker, Jr., was elected as pastor. Under his leadership, many former members returned to the church and many new members joined the church. In 1998, the Opal Ministry, a Senior Program, Brotherhood Ministry, and Nurse’s Ministry were all organized. The Royal Ambassadors was reorganized. Deacon Lester Brooks assumed leadership as President after the reorganization, Reverend Grady Wicker, Jr. served as pastor until August 30, 1999. Over the next few years several deacons were called from labor to reward. They included Deacon John Southerland, Deacon Fred Miller, Deacon Johnny Clark, Deacon Willie Allen, Deacon Abraham Overstreet, Deacon John L. Walton, and Deacon Roger Beard. In November 1999, Reverend Willie A. Green was called to pastor Moses. Reverend Green demonstrated a loving and peaceful style of servitude. His diligent and prayerful leadership created a culture of love. Under his leadership the church experienced a significant increase in membership. The church also purchased a new organ and a church van. The Healthcare Ministry was organized in 1999. Sister Melvin Newman served as President and Sister Vivian Carpenter served as Vice President. The following departed this life: Sister Molly Walton, Sister Katie Mae Sabb, Sister Willie Mae Lucas, Sister Mary A. Hurt, Brother William Stevens, Brother Bennie Brown, Sister Annie Brown, Sister Luvella Walton, Sister Janice Odom, and Sister Emma E. Taylor. In December 2004, Sister Maxine Mixon resigned as Church Clerk. Deacon Thomas Stevens suggested a plaque and a resolution letter be given to her. Sister Mixon received a plaque and a resolution marking twenty-four (24) years of service during the Church Anniversary Service on Sunday, February 20, 2005. On February 15, 2005, Sister Sarah L. King was elected as the interim Church Clerk during church conference. During 2005, the church van was paid in full, and a decision was made to combine Women and Men's Day-Sister Beverly Thomas and Brother Robert Bush were the chairpersons for this newly formed committee. The first committee members were: Sister Kathryn Williams, Sister Patricia Bailey, Sister Cynthia Sims, and Deacon William Smith, Jr. The first Women and Men's Day was held on November 20, 2005. The speaker was Reverend Monica Coffer from Carpentersville Baptist Church. On Easter Sunday in 2005, the morning service was opened by the newly created Praise and Worship Team. ‘The members were Sister Beverly Thomas, Sister Sarah King, Sister Cynthia Sims, and Deacon James K. Deacon Thomas Stevens, Deacon John Walton, Magnolia Goolsby Nixon were called from labor to reward. In August 2006, the Usher Board presented the church with two handicap parking spaces. On September 17, 2006, Evangelist Etta M. Eubanks was ordained. On September 28, 2006, Brother Curtis Shubert was ordained as a deacon. Deacon Fred Stallings established the Youth Group of Devotional Leaders. In January 2007, the church welcomed a new musician for the order of service and R.B. Bush Choi In 2008 the Board of Trustees purchased a cyclone fence to safeguard the heating and air units.During the yearseveral members were called from labor to reward: Sister Geneva B. Washington, Brother Henry ‘Wynn, Sister Henrietta Odom Smith, Brother Calloway Allen, Sister Shamera Morrow, and Sister Eva Ida Stallings. The Board of Trustees purchased a cyclone fence to safeguard the heating and air units. Reverend Willie A. Green retired as Pastor of Moses on December 27, 2009. A Pastoral Search Committee and Constitution Review Committee were established on February 16, 2010, at church conference. Pastoral Search Committee Members - Dr. Robert Bush, Sister Kathryn Williams, Brother Wayne Canty, Sister Barbara Hazel, Sister Ebony Sims, Deacon Fred Stallings, Sister Juliette Ellis Milton, and Sister Jeannette Mims. Constitution Review Committee - Dr. Robert Bush, Brother Aaron Bennett, Brother Wayne Canty, Sister Victoria Forrest, Sister Frederick A. Stallings, Sister Tujuana B. Wiggins, and Sister Brenda Washington. Brother Wayne Canty and Brother Ronnie Dunbar were ordained as Deacons on March 7, 2010, by Reverend Willie A. Green. The Board of Deacons chairpersons were: Deacon Fred Stallings (Chairman) and Deacon William Smith, Jr. (Co-Chairman). The Board of Trustees chairpersons were: Brother Charles Washington (Chairman) and Sister Shirley Anderson (Co-Chairperson) Sister Kathryn Golphin, the oldest baptized member of Moses, Sister Dollie Persons, and Sister Earlene Coleman were called from labor to reward. Through much prayer and fasting, God sent us a pastor. On November 6, 2010, Reverend Corey D. Brown was elected as Pastor. The church received Reverend Brown and the first family with love (His wife, Lady Elizabeth H. Brown and children, Christopher Brown, Elijah Brown, and Cori Brown. Reverend Brown's ion was “transforming all generations through the word of God.” The mission statement was to “evangelize, educate, equip, empower, and edify.” His goal was “producing ambassadors for Christ.” Reverend Corey D. Brown was installed as Pastor of Moses on January 16, 2011, by Reverend Doctor Sam Davis (Beulah Grove Baptist Church). The church adopted a theme for the year entitled “Watch God Work.” Moses was also blessed with many accomplishments: Spiritual Improvements Increased membership and many were baptized Monthly Vision Breakfast Added Friday Night Live Added (Youth Activity) Hospitality Ministry formed Wie Ese N aa BAPTIST CHURCH CHURCH ANNIVERSARY inleper Healthcare Ministry offered free blood pressure screenings each second service monthly Physical Improvements New Wireless Microphones New Speakers Church Ground Sprinkler System Installed a new Audio/Video System (2012) Renovated the Men and Women’s restroom located in the fellowship hall - they were made handicap accessible (2013) Painted church and installed new carpet in the sanctuary (2012) Launched a new website (www.mmbcaugsta.org) Five (5) deacons were ordained under Pastor Brown's leadership: Deacon James Bride, Deacon Raymond Terrell, Deacon Michael Lowe, Deacon Thomas Stallwood, and Deacon James Howard. Brother Jerry Britt was hired as musician, a Sunday morning devotion all praise team “Voices of Agape” was formed.in October 2013, Sister Sophia Helen Allen was called from labor to reward. In 2014, Sister Brenda Washington and Sister Vernice Brooks were assigned as directors of the Youth Ministry. Two additional properties were inherited for church expansion and parking. The following members were called from labor to reward: Brother Bobby Washington, Sister Lillie Mae Simmons, Brother Henry Chapman, Brother Richard Mims, Sister Maxine Mixon, Sister Julia Raye departed this life. In 2015, Reverend Corey D. Brown resigned as Pastor and a Pastoral Search Committee was selected: Pastoral Search Committee - Dr. Robert Bush (Chairman), Brother Carl Jones, Sister Sharon Henderson, Brother Devant Bush, Sister Vivian Carpenter, Sister Jerald Howard, Sister Emma Kelton, Brother Jerry Britt, Sister Regina Jones, Sister Emma King, Sister Cathy Adams, Brother Ray Tyler, and one alternate, Sister Gloria Bride. In 2015 the Healthcare Ministry donated four (4) tables for the fellowship hall. Other donations included: ‘two (2) desktop computers, an office chair and four (4) office cabinets. Sister Minnie Belle Hyder, Brother Bobby Lee Ellis, Sister Josephine Brooks, Deacon Ronnie Dunbar, Brother Newton Eubanks, and Sister Mary Dorothy Ellis were called from labor to reward. On January 12, 2016, Reverend Jamaal Wilcher was elected as Pastor of Moses. Pastor Wilcher was installed on Sunday, May 29, 2016, by Reverend Doctor Charles E. Goodman, Jr. (Tabernacle Baptist Church). Under his leadership, a new mission and vision statement was adopted. The following accomplishments were made: Church Re-branded through a new logo, letterhead and envelopes, guest cards, and a website (www.mosesaugusta.com) Launched four (4) new ways to give. Upon entering the year, the Moses family declared that 2017 would be the year of “divine conquering” and as declared, it was a year of conquering and accomplishments. With a focus on discipleship and membership, 55 new members were added to the church family. In addition, the following accomplishments were made: Media equipment to allow for livestream and broadcast of all worship services Launched a Young Adult Ministry to serve the 18-39-year-old demographic of the church. ‘Awarded six scholarships totaling $2,100.00 Donated more than 300 backpacks during the annual back-to-school drive Removed a condemned house on the church's property Purchased a church management system Upgraded HVAC System Renewed focus on Legacy Offering (Project Gideon 300 Club) After many years of service, Deacon Fred Stallings was moved to vacate his seat as Chairman of the. Board of Deacons. During the November conference, the Moses Church Family moved to confer “Chairman Emeritus” for Deacon Stallings. Deacon Michael Lowe was named as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. Brother John Jones joined the Board of Trustees. Sister Virginia Bush, Sister Ethe! Odum, Brother Clifford Wright, Sister Carolyn Cobb, and Forrest were called from labor to reward. ter Rosa The church theme for 2018 was SOAR (Serve, Optimize, Ascend and Relate). Pastor Wilcher continued to minister through transformational teaching and preaching. Sister Patricia Bailey-Clark became a Deaconess. The church theme for 2020 was “It Is Done”, In March of 2020, our church, along with many other churches, was impacted by COVID-19 (coronavirus). In adherence with CDC guidelines, Wie Ese N aa BAPTIST CHURCH CHURCH ANNIVERSARY inleper in-person worship services were cancelled to combat the spread of the virus. Worship services were moved entirely online (livestream, facebook, YouTube). Leadership meetings and other ministry meetings were held via Zoom. Other efforts were utilized to maintain connection with members such as phone calls, greeting cards, drive-by visits, etc. These efforts include: Pastor Wilcher and members of Leadership Team did a drive-by vi with a small gift Pastor's Support provided meals for elderly and/or members with health issues Mailed greeting cards on a quarterly basis to members Zoom meetings with Leadership Team Senior Enhancement provided outreach and gifts to senior members with senior members and presented them In October 2020, the church re-opened on a limited basis in accordance with CDC guidelines. Reserve seating was available for up to 40 members in an effort to maintain social distancing of 6 feet apart. Although the pandemic impacted the way worship service was held, Pastor Wilcher continued to minister through transformational teaching and preaching. The following accomplishments were made during 2020: Completed Pulpit Renovation Purchased choir chairs Installed new roof Upgraded ProPresenter Donated more than 300 backpacks during the annual back-to-school drive Donated 200 masks to W. S. Hornsby Elementary School Breast Cancer Donation ~ Lydia Project Donation to Miracle Making Ministries, Inc. Donated toys to Hope House and Safe Homes of Augusta Established YouTube Channel A special effort was made to provide assistance and appreciation to workers providing essential services in ‘our community. Those efforts included: Provided meals for Augusta Fire Department (3) in our local community Provided hand sanitizer and masks for the Augusta Public Transit Authority 1g members were called from labor to reward in 2020: Sister Maggie Fallen and Brother George In January 2021, Pastor Wilcher shared the church theme which was “Thrive 21”. Pastor Wilcher continued to ter through transformational teaching and preaching, In June 2021, a generous donation was received from Peter Knox which assisted in the purchase of a state-of-the-art audio system. Other accomplishments made during 2021 included: Hosted three (3) COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics. Hosted a weekly food drive. Installed a state-of-the-art audio system. Demolished condemned property at 27 Walker Street. Donations were made to the following organizations: Wie Ese N aa BAPTIST CHURCH CHURCH ANNIVERSARY inleper -Miracle Making Ministries -Safe Homes (9 bicycles and toys) -Hope House (2 bicycles and treat bags) -Lydia Project -Miracle Mile Walk (Breast Cancer donation) -Jeffery Van Chavis House (donated gas cards) -Georgia Chemo Infusion Center and Georgia Radiation Center (donated forty cancer care packages) -Heating Energy Assistance Team, Inc.(HEAT) -American Heart and Stroke Association Annual Back to School Drive ~ donated 337 bookbags and fifty gift cards to Hornsby Elementary ‘School/Middle School. In September 2021, Deacon James Howard retired as groundskeeper for Moses Missionary Baptist Church. Deacon Howard was presented with a plaque in appreciation for his dedication and service in maintaining the church grounds. The following members were called from labor to reward in 202: Brother Terry Solomon, Deacon Fred Stallings (Chairman Emeritus), Sister Pat Gathers, and Sister Richiedeen Moment.
