The sciences do not try to explain, they hardly even try to interpret, they
mainly make models. By a model is meant a mathematical construct which,
with the addition of certain verbal interpretations, describes observed
phenomena. The justification of such a mathematical construct is solely and
precisely that it is expected to work.

John Von Neumann

Physical models are as different from the world as a geographical map is

from the surface of earth.

6

DEFINISI MODEL

Model is something that we use in lieu of the real system in order to

understand something about that system.

Model is a representation of an object, a system, or an idea in some form

other than that of the entity itself. (Shannon)

Model is an abstraction of a real system. It is a representation of the objects

within the system and the rules that govern the interactions of the objects.

Model is constructing a conceptual framework that describes a system.

Model of a system is an abstraction of that system that gives us

comprehensible representations of systems.

DEFINISI PEMODELAN

Modeling is a process of
abstraction of a real system.

The abstracted model may be

logical or mathematical.

KARAKTERISASI MODEL

Deterministic or Stochastic
Does the model contain stochastic components?

Static or Dynamic
Is time a significant variable?

Continuous or Discrete
Does the system state evolve continuously or only at discrete points in time?

Continuous: classical mechanics

Discrete: queuing, inventory, machine shop models

Models can have diagrams

Choice of form depends on the

purpose of the model

A model is a static representation of

KONSTRUKSI Entity The representation of some

be explicitly defined

Attribute Some characteristic of a

Event An interaction between

Entity-Relationship Modeling

❑Entity: distinguishable object of some type

❑Entity type: type of a set of entities
❑Attribute value: piece of information (partially)
describing an entity
❑Attribute: type of a set of attribute values
❑Relationship: association between two or more
entities
