Stephen Covey is an American author, educator, professor, keynote

speaker and entrepreneur


Perhaps very few writers have managed five years on the bestseller lists, gained a global
following, and created a multi-million dollar business empire, all through genre self-help and
literary business – Stephen Covey is one of them. The New York Times bestselling author
has been hailed as the most successful 'management guru' of all time. He gave the world the
prototype for personal and professional effectiveness and has positively changed the lives of
millions of people around the world. Its customers include many Fortune 500 companies,
government organizations, universities, students, individuals and even former US President
Bill Clinton. He is best known for his book, 'The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People',
which remained on the New York Times bestseller list for an unprecedented 250 weeks.
Some of his other books are, 'Leadership by Principle', 'The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to
Greatness' and 'The Leader in Me'. Besides writing books that change lives for people, he is
also a motivational speaker and professor at Brigham Young University. He graduated with
an MBA from Harvard Business School and also served as a missionary.

Childhood & Early Life


Stephen Richards Covey was born on October 24, 1932 in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States
of America to Stephen Glenn Covey and Irene Louise Richards Covey.
When he was in junior high school, he was diagnosed with capital femoral epiphysis, because
of which he could not take part in athletics. Despite this, he actively participated in debates
and public speaking events in high school.
He graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science degree in business
administration. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in
the church's mission in England for two years.
Upon his return, he attended Harvard University, where he earned an MBA. From 1962, he
was president of the Church of Ireland Mission and continued to work for the mission of the
church.

Career
He was appointed assistant president of Brigham Young University. Moreover, he holds the
post of professor of business management as well. While at university, he pursued a
Doctorate in Religious Education.
In 1970, he wrote the book, 'The Spiritual Roots of Human Relations'. This book addresses
the root causes of relationship problems and provides readers with spiritual solutions.
In 1982, he came out with the book 'The Divine Center'. The book is one of many devotional
works he wrote for readers of Latter-day Saints, a primitive church of Christianity.
In 1984, he resigned from his teaching position at Brigham Young University to set up a
training company called, "Stephen R. Covey and Associates".
In 1987, ‘Stephen R. Covey and Associates' changed its name to y Covey Leadership Centre,’
The company's aim was to offer training and productivity tools to organizations and
individuals.
On April 1, 1989, he published a book, 'Leadership centered on Principles'. This book
explores various strategies for personal and professional effectiveness. It also provides insight
into how to develop people and organizations.
In 1989, he published his best-selling book, 'Seven Habits of Highly Effective People'. It is
his most famous business and self-help book which has received international acclaim. This
book has sold more than 25 million copies and has been translated into 38 languages.
In 1994, he made his next publication, 'First Things First'. Written by A. Roger and Rebecca
R. Merrill, this book highlights the importance of time management.
Meanwhile, to reach a wider audience, he combined 'Covey Leadership Center' with Franklin
Quest to produce 'Franklin Covey'. It is a global professional services company that indulges
in selling training and productivity tools to individuals and organizations
In 2004, he published the book, 'The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness', which is a
sequel to his previously published book, "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People". The
book urges people to find their own voices and inspires others to do the same.
In 2008, he released a book entitled, "The Leader in Me - How Schools and Parents Around
the World Inspire Greatness, One Child at a Time". This book delves deeply into how certain
schools, institutions and people nurture the next generation to meet the challenges and
opportunities of the 21st century.
In 2008, he launched the 'Stephen Covey Online Community', a collection of online courses
and a social network. With people synced to the World Wide Web, he uses online platforms
to convey his ideas on current topics and self-leadership.
In 2010, she wrote an article, 'Our Children and the Crisis in Education', which appeared in
the Huffington Post news. He also organizes conferences and workshops to train elementary
school administrators through a website.

Great Job
His book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People' is listed on 'Time' magazine's list of
the 25 Most Influential Business Management Books. This book is sold in 38 languages
worldwide. It also became the first non-fiction audiobook to sell over one million copies.
Awards & Achievements
In 1994, he was the recipient of the International Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
In 1996, 'Time' magazine named him as one of the '25 most influential Americans'.
In 1998, he was awarded the International Man for Peace Sikh Prize.
In 2003, he received the 'Fatherhood Award' from The National Fatherhood Initiative, a non-
profit organization.
In 2004, he was the recipient of the 'Golden Gavel' award, presented to him by Toastmasters
International, a non-profit educational organization.
On November 14, 2009, he was inducted into the Utah Valley Forum's Entrepreneurial
Forum Hall of Fame.

Personal Life & Legacy


He is married to Sandra, with whom he fathered nine children. He is blessed with fifty-two
grandchildren.
He died on July 16, 2012 at the age of 79 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, after suffering increasing
complications from a bicycle accident.
